Title: Mozilla Thunderbird - Is V3 working OK now?
Post by: JB on Oct 22, 2010, 15:29:36
I'm still running V2 and seem to remember that there was some discussion on here a while back about a problem with V3. I think Alan, kinmel posted about it.

Just about to install a new system and was wondering if it would be better to stick to V2 or install V3?

Anyone help?

Thanks,

JB.

Sorry, JB, I use Outlook, but I'm sure someone will be along shortly...

Sorry, SeaMonkey here.  I've not heard any mass grumblings about the new version of TB, though.  :dunno:

Thanks Simon.

There's something in the back of my mind about the depth of directories (folders) or number of pop accounts. TBH I'm not sure. Think I will do a bit of Googling to see what I can find.

Just to follow up on my own post.

I found one from Alan about Thunderbird V3 automatically setting up IMAP protocol to the exclusion of pop protocol.

Still looking.

The main niggle with Thunderbird 3 is it's new feature when setting up new email accounts.  Once you have entered an email address into the wizard it goes off and quizzes the mail domain and automatically sets up the mail server entries and protocols.  Trouble is if it decides to grant you IMAP rather than POP3, it is then a nightmare to change it to the other options.

I always disconnect the PC from the router when doing a set-up and then you get a to do a manual set-up.

Other than that I still like Thunderbird and it's addons.

Is there not an option, Alan, to manually set up email accounts without having to disconnect?

Once you have confirmed your email address there is a page change, there is a "manual set-up" button, but by the time that page appears and you have pressed the button, it's too late to stop the automated system.

You do get to sit there for 30 seconds, angrily watching all the wrong parameters being magically entered though :bawl:

Someone must have enjoyed creating that feature!  ;D

I like to imagine the guy's Eureka moment, not when all that coding and testing finally worked, but when he was first told some people don't wan't automatic set-up.

BlunderTurd is a more appropriate name, I stopped using it a loooong time ago, even Outlook Express worked better.

ThunderBird is okay, but it's no Firefox. That said, V3 does seem to work now without any nasty CPU hogging mess.

Every time Thunderbird asks me to upgrade to version 3, I tell it to clear off. I prefer to set up my own email accounts correctly and there is still no fix for a maximum of three addresses displayed on bccs. This might not sound a big deal, but it is a pain if you do a lot of mailing shots, as I do.

I'm still using version 2.0.0.24 (http://www.oldapps.com/thunderbird.php?old_thunderbird=47), which was the last decent one before 3.0. came out.

That was the other thing I now remember, many thanks JohnH. That would be a big disadvantage to me, so I'll stick with V2 which in all honesty I do like very much.

I heard they were bringing out a fix for the bcc issue in 3.1, but I tried it recently and it still had the same problem.  :(
