What users can do.... is apply common sense!
I have done without antivirus for ten years now. I know it's not for everyone, but I'm just saying if you're careful (read: paranoid, ahem) then all will be well assuming you have a secure (ish) OS and a firewall.
:gulp:
Without anti-virus, how would you know if you did get infected?
Good question - the virus might let you know, of course.
Or the bank might once your account has been cleared.

The "secure -ish" OS is a clue.

He's using a BBC Micro? :eek4:
It's almost always incredibly obvious if you know your system. I know every process that should be listed in task manager at any time. Peculiarly named files that cannot be deleted are another sure sign. I'm always pruning my startup list as well, another opportunity to check for rogue entries. Finally, strange processes must be *authorised* to connect to networks in Windows 7. Unless you have foolishly turned UAC off.
