Title: Connection drops
Post by: Entity on Oct 11, 2010, 07:27:26
Hey guys I'm currently having issues with Connection Loss ONLY with online games & VoIP software like Skype & Ventrilo while the connection has dropped with these such programs Internet browsing still functions the same with decent speed.

Is this something on my end or the ISP end? It has been happening for a good while now, doesn't happen all the time but randomly occurs maybe twice a week but when it happens it consistently disconnects etc.
I do not have any firewalls/antivirus & whatnot blocking any traffic on my pc.

Current Net Status from the router page:

ADSL
Type   Fast Path
Status SHOWTIME

                      Downstream Upstream
Data rate(Kbps)    8128Kb 448Kb
Noise Margin            12 25
Output power(dBm)  119 199
Attenuation(dB)       20 10

and a current speedtest:

Your connection stats look good. Do you totally lose connection or just to the gaming and voip?

Just the Games & VoIP, regular web browsing is flawless during this time.

It certainly looks like a local issue, but I'm not really sure what it is so I'll leave it for others to make suggestions!

Haha, cheers mate. It may well be but its weird how it only effects the gaming/voice and not net browsing.

I really can't think of a reason. What are your ping times like - that's about the only common link between the two.

On European servers my ping is anything between 20-80 & on American its about 220 give or take. The games/voice runs brilliantly until it has random connection drops, it makes the programs disconnect without interfering my internet browsing etc.

But yeah I'm pulling a blank as to why this is happening too.

Do you have a spare router you could try?

I have actually tried an alternative router, was no noticeable difference to me.

If there's no logical reason behind it I think I'll have to hope whatever it is figures itself out. Thanks for giving it some thought anyways.

Think it might be something todo with the Pc maybe, I'll have to check with a different device next time.

Perhaps check with IDNet when the dusts settled to see if you have an upstream issue.

Just had a chat with support, what MTU are you using...

Current MTU is 1454.

Try 1458. if that doesn't help, try 1430.

Thanks Rik, I will do. However I'm not currently experiencing the issues as they do occur rather randomly but I will note what you said down and give them a shot next time.

Thanks everybody who replied I appreciate your time.

You can test if you ping the affected sites with the -f flag. If that reports fragmented packets, the MTU is too high.
