Title: Strange? - Home phone rings without being plugged in
Post by: qweezy on Oct 05, 2010, 16:47:42
Hello,

Been having some issues with my connection again.  I have had my line reset by IDNET twice now and it gets cappped/reduced by BT because of what I presume is a high amount of errors.  I was getting lots of uncorrected blocks.

I narrowed this down to a filter issue, because I also had uncancelled echo of +10ish.

My connection was reset today so I am back up to a 5000kbs sync and I am plugged into the test socket.  However, I have noticed that I get uncorrected blocks when someone rings my house phone.  I dont lose sync, but uncorrected blocks are reported.

The weird thing is, because my line is reset I have nothing plugged in!  I have tested this myself by phoning my home phone and I get a ring tone but there is not a house phone plugged in.  I would of thought it would go straight to the answer phone service?

Is this normal?  Could it be that the filter I replaced is also dodgy but just not quite as much?

Thanks.

Could be, but I'd suspect an HR fault on the line, the ring current is upsetting the line physically. TBH, I'm not sure whether a ring current gets put on the line if there's no phone connected, but I'm assuming it must do because the line isn't going to be showing as engaged, so it will ring 8-9 times before going to the answer service.

Hmmmm.....

I would try another filter, but I dont want to upset the line as its only just been reset!

I dont use the house much if at all.  If only people didnt ever ring it, haha.

You could have all incoming calls blocked, I think. :)

Before Rik beat me to it   ;D I was also going to say in addition that I believe no filter is required if no phones are connected.

so I would need to take it up with BT to get all calls blocked right?

I bet connecting without a filter will cause my net to drop when someone rings.  Even without any phones anywhere, haha.

If BT is your voice carrier, yes.

Packing the car Sunday knocked the stuffing out of me and the bug returned with a vengeance. Even my GP has it now. :(

Out of interest............

How many Corrected Blocks/Uncorrectable Blocks would trigger a sync cap?  Ballpark amount?

Too simplistic, qweezy, it will look at everything that's happening on your line to make the decision.

So should be okay with errors every now and then?  I understand corrected aren't that important, but the uncorrected are.

Just thinking that I don't get all that many phone calls and get about 4-5 uncorrected if I ring my house phone until the answer service.  So with a couple of calls a day I might get 20-30 uncorrected blocks.

I generally hold sync for long periods of time, but its not uncommon for it to happen maybe once every 20-30days.

Will get fibre at the end of the year when my exchange supports it, but would be nice to get this sorted for the next few months!

Thanks.

Uncorrected blocks are indicators of instability. Given you can't sync above 8M, it might be worth asking to be remodulated to ADSLMax, which is less prone to noise.

Oh I see.

Would support be able to do that if I dropped them an email?

They would indeed - the good news is you keep the bandwidth allowance.
