Two OpenReach vans been parked around the various green cabinets for the last few days, and today I find they've painted a cabinet-sized area next to the one I'm connected to, with the word "DSLAM" in it, which presumably means the fibre cabinet (due in December) will replace the existing one and all the existing connections will get moved to a new cabinet.
Presumably this will not improve my 1mbps connection (that's about average in the area judging by the local results in the online testers) and will probably give me another few weeks of instability. ::)

While I understand a bit about networking, DSL is a mystery to me.

;D I'll be very glad if I can get FTTP so that I can leave syncing, profiles and the like behind me but I suspect when igoes from trial to production BT will introduce varying levels of service and will have a tiered pricing structure for ISPs like they do with leased lines currently.

I think the terms have become interchangeable, google reveals more dslam fttc than msan fttc. Does voice connect to the cabinet as well
It does, Steve, the vDSL cable carries the voice, just as the ADSL one does.
If the voice is handled by the cabinet it has to be a MSAN doesn't it?
I don't know, Steve, but I think so.
Think BT have had problems with getting voice running on 21CN so they may not be rolling out MSANs just yet.

tbh i really do hope that they DO put another box next to our 'green' one and move all the connections.. maybe just maybe it will cure the impossible and finally fix my internet connection. I will quite happily upgrade/shift to the fibre option with IDNET, but the 21cn upto 24meg upgrade was not even worth contemplating seeing as my current arrangement has never secured a stable connection. If i can't get the upto-8mb one to at least play ball, the upto 24mb one is not worth a look.. is it?
the fibre option though, i'll GLADLY move to, never know it might mean that when i've finished doing desktop/network support in my day job that i can relax at night without having to constantly fight with a connection at home for my bb.
Found an update to my Netgear DG834gV5 firmware on friday and have installed that to see if it helps.. no 'red light' while i've been working all weekend, but remains to be seen if I just had a clear few days..
