Title: Who stole the internet?
Post by: Niall on Sep 05, 2010, 09:48:20
According to my router I'm still connected but I can't access any sites as of about 15 minutes ago. I've rebooted the router twice with the same result, and now have it unplugged to try that. Everything was fine until 15 mins ago too, connected at nearly 14mb since I had that noise issue a few weeks ago that went away!

Yeah.

My router did exactly the same, stayed "connected" or so it thought but red light was on and no internet.

Down for about 15 mins.  All OK again now though.

Hi.

I had the same thing occur.  I have no alternative way of connecting to the internet when it goes down, but obviously it's come back up now because I am posting!!  It went down just after 9.30am, and has just returned.  Hope it stays that way!  I think (going by the live feed) there was some work going on??

Moonshine.

There will be some anomalies until about 3, Baz, but hopefully, there won't be another total outage unless they have to reboot a router again.

They're replacing core routers (to meet customer growth) and one had to be re-booted after it went live.

Mine has been down since 8.15am Glad to know this is all that's happening as I've been fiddling with the router unnecessarily. We don't always read announcements, as this incident proves, and the thread has been read about 63 times last time I looked. Good on IDNET for notifying us, however, not all of their customers keep up with the site on regular basis. What about a text message service which we could subscribe to/or it could be free  ;D so that way we're all kept up to date  with any service announcements without having to ring in or wait to find out what's wrong? Most of us have only one line so if internet is down, there's no way of knowing what's going on... unless you were smart enough to read the announcements in the first place that is.
Title: Re: Who stole the internet?
Post by: Rik on Sep 05, 2010, 11:00:47
You could subscribe to the RSS feed, it's free and warned us of the work, hence we decided to put up the announcement. You shouldn't have been down at 8:15 though.

It is a good idea, the NatWest do one if you have their iPhone app so you get a text telling you your balance every Friday which is handy. I think it may have to be a paid for service I guess though as it may be a complex thing to set up.

You're right Rik, but it would be great to be notified of problems as they happen too, where service announcements wouldn't be useful. Anyway, serves us right for not reading the post. Great sunday to you all.

Ah panic over.
I too have been struggling with all the known "home fixes" today before checking here via my phone.

I hope this hardware upgrade inadvertently fixes my issues too (pages taking forever to open). My connection has been appalling since the Scotland/N Ireland outages a while back. I'm seriously thinking about trying a different ISP to see of I can regain the level of service I used to get from IDNet.

Title: Re: Who stole the internet?

Are we talking about community based SMS subscription or IDNet sponsored?
If there is not a website already setup to outsource such things, there should be. That way personal data could all be kept safe (IE no one here need know my number for example). IDnetters could register for updates. It could be paid for with an add at the bottom of the txt for "www.mcdonalds.com" or "Donald Russell sausages". Then Rik and the peeps here could relay a message "service down for 1 hour sunday" and the sms would be sent.

[edit]
We need something like "http://www.bulksms.co.uk/?gclid=CJvU8IbD8KMCFRZf4wodsy293Q" that intergrates directly into the forum/myspace/facebook so that people can register/unregister via a web portal. Hmm, saying that, does facebook have it's own SMS messaging service? We could start a "IDnetters Service update" page?
Title: Re: Who stole the internet?

Title: Re: Who stole the internet?

Well, as most people are able to access myspace or facebook or twitter from their mobiles now, could IDNet use one of these? Then the actual workload would be very small for them. Some simple script to copy/paste updates from the IDNet page/here to the twitter for example. There is also the App route.

Hmmm. My router messed up it's dates again.  :bawl:
But by the looks of it I got my connect back at 12 (if it was a system wide service interuption for repaires/upgrades). No idea how long it was down. So personally I've had no problems over here.
Title: Re: Who stole the internet?
Post by: Rik on Sep 05, 2010, 16:00:18
It's not down to IDNet's work, Ben, that would only have caused routing issues, not connection ones.

I had authentication drops yesterday afternoon and this morning when Ident were working.  I have just had another authentication drop for a fewminutes just now.  I am on the Frinton on sea exchange which is hardly congested at any time because of all the older peiople round here ;D  ANy ideas why, I expect BT work on the exchange, unfortunately BT don't always letIdnet know when or where they are going to carry out work so it's not worth worrying them about it just yet.

Hi Rik.
How are you doing mate?

To be fair, no I haven't. I reached breaking point last week and meant to do something about it but seeing I was distinctly underwhelmed with my last batch of contact (the Scotland/N Ireland outages - still don't know what happened) I've been procrastinating the "speaking to someone about it" part. You see it works then it doesn't, the connection feels like sludge then next minute it's back up again for a while. It's only been like this since the outages. I think I know what they will say anyway as I checked on here during the worst moments and no one else was reporting similar experiences so I presume it will be blamed on BT, my exchange, my wiring, my router etc.
After having stuck with IDNet for so many years (four now I think) I see the quality of my service really isn't as top notch as it used to be. I can't help thinking it's time to try elsewhere but having moved to this new house earlier this year and gone through all the waiting and extra charges involved in hooking up my BB, I'm put off going through all it again so soon. let's hope todays jiggery-pokery has put my line back the way it was.

You didn't miss it Rik, you've answered me twice now. ;D

No-one should be seeing any speed changes as a result of this work, it would not cause resyncs, so if you are, there's likely to something else going on locally. I'll see if I can get an update.

I'll try again tomorrow...

I am still having exactly the same problems. After flushing the DNS cache and a router reboot, I have tried accessing all of my usual sites and about 30% of them either show as server errors or do not display correctly but all work after refreshing the screen 1-2 times, all except for pcworld.co.uk, which will not display at all. That may just be a problem with them, but it shows that there still a lot of problems and disgruntled Idnet users.

Lost the entire dns (websites) earlier, then lost internet connection, but my router and the exchange were still up. Now it's all fine. BBC ebay etc all load instantly, even faster than normal. However, I use  Open DNS.  :dunno:

At the moment IDNet still achieve 99% uptime for me each year. So no complaints.  :thumb:

PS, perhaps if you try using Open DNS (http://www.opendns.com/) to see if this solves the problem? If it does, we can confirm it's a DNS problem, if it does not, then it's worse!  :eek4:

If Idnet think they have completed their upgrade, then they had better THINK AGAIN, for me now it is even worse as a greater number of my usual sites I access regularly are taking even
more refreshes to display and then a number of them are displayed as text format which then takes another refresh to correct. I cannot access speedtest.net at any server location without getting various errors.
I have flushed the DNS cache rebooted the router and as a last resort turned off the router and PC for several minutes. This is totally unacceptable, but I will shut down now and try it again tomorrow before making any decision.

Reboot no help for me. Can't access Steam store, and copy protection based within, so I can't play any games I want to :( Deviant art isn't loading, Facebook is having issues as is pretty much any site I look at now.

No disaster as I can get on the couple of sites I need to before I log off, but I think I'll just unplug my router for the night when I go to bed.

{edit} Now cannot log into MSN Messenger or hotmail. That is a pain in the arse, as I needed that. Ah well, might as well go to bed early and watch a film!
{edit 2} I'm now having issues seeing this forum!

Just dropped in here and saw this slight curfuffle about the lack of internet  .

I monitor both my IDnet lines via the Thinkbroadband service. Both lines showed they (edit) lost contact with the outside world today, but I've not experienced any issues since this on one of the lines (the other is an office line so not using it this weekend).

Here's the graphs showing both drops:

http://www.thinkbroadband.com/ping/share/d61c677a77b2bea640cc5401a183b5ac.html
http://www.thinkbroadband.com/ping/share/fb61cbda7e641dee6ef7353322a8bc40.html

The lines are on different exchanges. I use OpenDNS here (out of interest).

Now seems to be working OK for me during the last 30 mins or so, the site that gave the most trouble was Amazon, simply could not get it to load properly.
Had the same problems as everyone else this morning then the internet was absolutely flying for a couple of hours around midday. Come in from the garden and nearly all sites I tried to go to were a problem to resolve. Hopefully Simon has got it all sorted out now  :fingers:
