Title: Which DNS?
Post by: Ted on Aug 21, 2010, 18:21:50
I've been playing around with DNS servers over the last few weeks, using DNSBench.exe from grc.com and swapping one to another, download HERE (http://www.grc.com/dns/benchmark.htm) . It runs fine on Linux, using Wine.   ;D

It's noticable that the IDNet secondary server 212.69.40.3 is consistently faster than the primary at 212.69.36.3, I assume because it's not hammered as much as the primary?  So shhhhh! Don't tell anyone...  ;)

I've also noticed that (you'll like this) the Norton \ Symantec servers at 198.153.192.1 are consistently faster than the IDNet servers.  :hide:

The Open DNS servers don't do too bad, but again the secondary server does appear to be faster than the primary, maybe the same reason as IDNet's?

It's worth having a play with, you can add servers to test.

One server is in front of the network, Ted, the other behind it, so that might explain the speed difference.

I've always been a bit behind, so that explains it  ;D

I know that Norton (cough, spit) doesn't enjoy the best of reputations, but their DNS does seem to be a lot "snappier" than most, even when it doesn't test fastest! At least for me, be interesting to see what it's like for others.
