Title: Wireless network security
Post by: Lance on Apr 05, 2007, 12:29:20
When setting up security for a wireless network, you really should use WPA, and NOT WEP.

El reg (http://www.theregister.co.uk/2007/04/04/wireless_code_cracking/)  yesterday published an article, giving a perfect example why!

A useful reminder to us, Lance. While I prefer wires any time, when I do run my laptop in wireless mode, I'm amazed at home many wide-open wireless networks there are around me. :(

There's an interesting blog on the subject, here (http://blogs.zdnet.com/Ou/?p=43).

I wonder how long WPA will last, Siege? We're onto WPA2 already, but as computers become more powerful, it seems to me only a matter of time before someone finds a practical (ie fast) way to crack that.

I have to confess that I don't use either WEP or WPA on my Router / Wireless connection, but I do live down a village lane and I can see if there is any activity on my router.

I do have my ssid blocked however.

I know.. I know...  ;D

Actually, I'm with you, Inactive. If your location is such that you won't get people using your network, why incur the overheads involved in securing it. It always amused me, when we were homesitting last year, that the one secured network I came across was sat in the middle of 16 acres, with fields all around. :)
