Title: IDNet Bandwith Usage Monitoring Gadget for Windows 7 / Vista Sidebar
Post by: tKe on Aug 08, 2010, 21:23:51
OK I've created a Windows 7 / Sidebar gadget (Download (http://projects.karn.co.uk/files/IDNetBUM.gadget)).
(https://7790293656473663309-a-karn-co-uk-s-sites.googlegroups.com/a/karn.co.uk/projects/screenshot.png?attachauth=ANoY7cqqEucKygrWgaTs8qBI0-mXnQNJsZ0qzO4tIXtB1-q17reDkMsKQKAsq0_cSu6YdGGvbeLHyontGP91AN2yuqpY_vE3yFIKphLachoTTCYXEpRAnH07Y_-KSTnHj2RddBvZqPoK8W1eiDqCl0nSP69_QtMvhw3PI8e1eOa7wRjolQ75jWcNl7K3XF-w2pm2b6yYM7m3&attredirects=0)
Once installed, set up your idnet username/password (same ones you use here (https://www.idnet.net/secure/)) and your monthly allowances (peak/offpeak).

The gadget will display your current peak/offpeak usage as progress bars either side of a thin progress bar that shows the progress through the month.

If a usage progress bar is more than one percent less than the month progress bar, it's green. One percent more and it's red.  I can make this adjustable if people want me to.

Please post any suggestions / bugs in this thread and I'll try and keep on top of them - either that or I'll commit the gadget to git for any budding developers to play with (or cry over, when they see my nightmare javascript code).

The Username should be your normal username, the "key" is not your password, but is the "key" part of your RSS feed URL.
You can obtain this by doing the following:

Log in to the IDNet.net customer portal: https://www.idnet.net/secure/
Down on the bottom of the list on the left should be a link for Updates Via RSS
Right click on one of the top two links and choose to "Copy Link Address" (or something similar - depends on your browser)
Paste this into notepad or the address bar or somewhere and it will show you your "key" (everying after "key=" on the URL)
NB: to make things easier, you can paste this into the Username or Key box in the gadget setup and it will automagically extract the required components for you.

Excellent and useful gadget, thanks. Works just fine and, personally, I wouldn't complicate it with other features.

Good job; very nice.  :thumb:  If you fancy making the background and font colours customisable, that would be nice, but it's no biggie.

Very useful gadget but I have noticed that both figures are consistently 0.1GB less than the actual figures on Idnet.

Interesting - I hadn't noticed. It might be a difference in the way it's calculated.  The widget sums up the figures provided by the CSV file available through the customer portal and rounds to two decimal places.  I'll have a look when I get home.

Interesting, because here the meter stats are 0.1 Gb more than the IDNet figures!

The gadget doesn't use the RSS feed to obtain the data (instead it uses the CSV files through the customer portal).
I can assure you I do nothing with your credentials other than pass them to idnet to log into the portal, however feel free to look through the code (win+R -> "%localappdata%\Microsoft\Windows Sidebar\Gadgets\IDNetBUM.gadget"). settings.html and index.html contain the only Javascript code I wrote (the javascript files in the js folder are all libraries or library extensions).

It might be possible to add a configuration option to not try and log in to the customer portal and use any cached/saved login details in IE (as the IE engine is used to display the gadgets) - something else I can look into tonight.

This would be a little more difficult to do with the rounded background, however you could always replace the img/background.png file with your own and modify the CSS styles in index.html to suit.
To change the progressbar colours, there are two CSS statements that specify the warning and good colours:
    .pbwarning .ui-progressbar-value { ... }
   .pbgood .ui-progressbar-value { ... }

To change the default progressbar colours, you'll need to add a statement above the warning and good statements (so that they will override it)
    .ui-progressbar-value { ... }

To specify progressbar colours for the month progressbar, add a statement (after the default colours, if you've added some)
    #pbmonth .ui-progressbar-value { ... }

Hope that helps if you want to play around, you'll need to remove and re-add the gadget to pick up any changes made to any files and you'll need to re-enter your settings (as they're specific to the gadget instance).

Turns out this isn't possible (or at least not how I can think of doing it). Unfortunately the gadgets are run in a seperate IE environment so the existing login session in IE doesn't count for the gadget. Other ways of logging in (for instance, displaying the idnet site in a flyout and logging in through that) doesn't work as any form submission or links clicked inside the flyout are opened in a new browser window.

There may be another alternative to storing login credentials but I'll have to see how that plays out.

Superb; I was just about to code one of these up using the Netvibes API.. this one looks great & I've already customised it's look to fit in with my desktop :) I like the fact that these widget frameworks often use HTML + JS.. makes life easy! In fact, that's exactly what I'm using to develop iPhone and Android apps ;D

I just need to look into an issue with the gadget seemingly not refreshing and then I'll have an even better version to put up (same styling, just some javascript changes) that should show the most up-to-date bandwidth information available and without requiring your password (just the username apikey from your RSS feed url).

Watch this space.

P.S. Just in case others appreciate your design changes - would you mind posting them somewhere?
P.P.S. I've also got an almost-finished Android appWidget that shows the same information on your homescreen which I should be finishing at some point.

Post by: tKe on Aug 27, 2010, 01:14:43
OK I've completed the Android gadget at long last.

Download link (http://projects.karn.co.uk/files/IDNetBUMWidget.apk)
Landscape Screenshot (http://projects.karn.co.uk/landscape.png)
Portrait Screenshot (http://projects.karn.co.uk/portrait.png)

Configuration asks for Username and API key from the RSS Feed url, along with your bandwidth limits and your desired update frequency.

If you copy the RSS subscribe url from the idnet portal (long press on the "Subscribe" link and choose copy link) before adding the widget, it will automatically populate the Username and API Key fields.

It's still very much in beta for other users (works fine for me, but I can't test it on any other phones).

Which Android version are you using? I've only tested it on 2.1 for the moment (but can probably set up a 1.6 emulator for testing and debugging on if need be).

Can you post the exact error message?

Thanks

+ configuration is now a dialog instead of a full blown window - much quicker to load and prettier to look at.
+ icon!
+ working "next" support for all edittext boxes in the configuration panel

If anyone is interested, I've made a few adjustments to the code to make it work a bit better for me. Basically I needed it to be a bit more resilient.. it'll wait 15 seconds until attempting to login (allowing time for the wireless to come up), then re-try every 5 minutes if it can't login, which is useful if you're working in a corporate environment & a proxy needs to get set in Windows. Just extract the file & replace index.html in this folder...

Can I ask is this a 32bit gadget? I'm running 64bit and I've tried numerous times to install it without success. It goes through the motions asking about install etc but then it just disappears without actually installing :bawl:

Scratch the question, got it sorted, had to install restart, uninstall restart then install again and now it works fine  :thumb:

Here are some changes that I've made so that it has a timeout & retry mechanism.. I need it for trouble with switching between my corporate proxy & home network, without it the widget doesn't ever time out on the Ajax call & then won't try again.

Both the Windows gadget and Android widget use the API Key, not your customer portal password. Your API Key can be found in the RSS feed URL that you can get from the customer portal.

1. Log in to the Customer Portal (go to idnet.net and click "Customer Login" in the top right)
2. Click on "Bandwidth Usage" on the left hand side of the portal, under "Broadband"
3. Click on "Bandwidth Updates via RSS"

Windows Gadget
4. Right click on the "Subscribe" link and copy the URL.
5. Paste the URL into either the Username or the Key field in the Windows Gadget and move to another field, the correct values should be extracted from the URL automagically.

Android Gadget (with steps 1-3 above done using the Android Web Browser)
4. Long click on the "Subscribe" link and copy the URL
5. Add the widget to your homescreen, the Username and Key fields will be populated from the URL in the clipboard automagically.

I'm thinking of redesigning the windows 7 Gadget to make it look more inline with the Android AppWidget (so basically make it smaller and prettier, with a tiny refresh icon in the top right. No need for the configuration "cog" as that's handled by the gadget api).

Any complaints? Would people prefer I gave the option / made it skinnable?

I don't know what the Android one looks like, can you post a screengrab?
My only comments are that I would prefer the gadget to be a bit more 'glass' and not have the 'Refresh' in plain text

Not very "Glass" though. Although I could offer alternative backgrounds...

Implementing the rounded bars is going to be "fun" with IE as the gadget engine doesn't support the css rounded-corners styling.

The gadget is currently showing that I have 7.74g left of my peak time usage but on checking through the portal my usage is showing as 14.46g out of a 30g allowance. When I uncheck the "show remailing box" my usage is shpwing a 22.26g peak which doesn't correspond either, does the gadget not take into account the free usage for 25th-26th Dec I wonder

I'm currently not in a fit state to provide any answer other than my widget appears to have recorded nothing since midnight on the 24th. I'm not sure if that answers your question or not

The broken links was due to DNS settings which may take 48 hours to filter through to IDNet's DNS servers. I'm using the Google Public DNS servers which already have the update.

Either way, I've attached the Windows 7/Vista Gadget (IDNetBUM.gadget) and Android Widget (IDNetBUMWidget.apk).

Here's my current (http://localhostr.com/files/wFSUak5/capture.png)

Anyway we can convert the gadget to this as it will then make it real easy to skin etc?

The skin im using for Rainmeter is Gnometer (http://rainmeter.net/RainCMS/?q=Suites_Gnometer) just incase any one want it as its a breeze to setup

Taken from their website:
localhostr is a great way to quickly share all kinds of files. we've just relaunched the site and hope you like it! start by using the file browser. 1GB per file for registered users otherwise 50MB per file.

Hi Seadog,

The Username should be your normal username, the "key" is not your password, but is the "key" part of your RSS feed URL.
You can obtain this by doing the following:

I hope that helps, if you still have problems, please do not hesitate to PM me or respond in this thread (where others can help or learn from the solution)

Good luck, and I hope you enjoy using it :)

Hi Colin,

Sorry to hear its not working for you - can you give me any specifics as to what isn't working? Are you about to select the widget from the widget selection menu? Does it prompt you for your Username and API Key? Does it fail to retrieve the data from the internet? 79% of the current installs are Android 2.2 but all have larger screen sizes then the Wildfire so that may be worth me looking at with the emulator.

Any further informtion would be greatly appreciated

Kind regards,

I've just tried it on a friends Wildfire S (not quite the same, I know, but it has the same screen size). It seems to run fine.

It's not an application you "run" but a widget you add to your home screen. You should find it in the listings under "Personalize -> Widget" if you're still using HTC Sense.

I tried again and I have got it working. The problem was me because after it downloaded and installed I was looking for it under the APPS, I did not realise until I saw your comment above that it was a widget. I am still trying to get used to this smartphone as it is my first and I keep finding new things all the time on it.

Hi all,

It does indeed seem as though the data source for the widget/gadget has been broken by the recent website update. I've enquired into a fix and if/when it becomes available I will endeavour to update both Windows 7 Gadget and Android Widget ASAP if required.

As for making the source available for the android widget, I'd have to check with IDNet to ensure they're happy with it being made public.

Thanks for your patience

I was really just interested in the code that presents the animated circle when the widget is retrieving the data. I tried to make that happen on a widget of my own earlier in the year and couldn't find a way to do it.

If you want a background that looks like the new site, I could give it a go. Am handy with a pixel spray gun. ;)

Any chance of an update to the windows widget and android app to show just one allowance bar for the new packages (which are not on/off peak). Also do gadgets still exist in Win8 i am guessing not but I've not used it a lot? Still wondering whether to but it whilst its cheap for £25

Unfortunately I can't look into updating the android widget for some time as the source code is on an IDE disk and my recent upgrade doesn't have any IDE ports. Will have to get an adapter at some point.

I'll have a look at updating the Win7 gadget when I have the chance. Can someone let me know if their usage comes back as only peak or offpeak? Unfortunately I'm unable to test this myself as I'm still on (and will be sticking to) a dual-tariff account.

If I do support single-tariff, would it be preferable to reduce the height of the gadget (for both android/win7) or increase the height of the single progress bar?

Thanks for a great little Gadget tKe.

Just installed the W7 version, it's working well.

Thanks,

Chris

Just to update you all, I've just moved to a new property and unfortunately was unable to keep my dual-tariff account. I'll be starting a new single-tariff account when BT Openreach get around to installing my phone line on the new property in the second half of January. Once I'm back up and running on IDNet I'll look into updating the widgets to support single-tariff accounts.

I just downloaded it, but of course I got the dual-tariff version and I'm on single-tariff.  Did the single-tariff version ever make it?

It depends which you're after - Windows gadget or Android widget?

Unfortunately the Android widget it didn't make it. The IDE hard disk it was stored on unfortunately didn't make it through the move. I've started from scratch but it's been a while since I did some android development and time is tight so don't expect it soon.

If it was the windows gadget you're after I do have a tweaked version I've been using. It's the same layout as the dual-tarrif but the top text says how much has been used, the bottom text how much is remaining and both bars are usage (middle bar still month progress).

You should be able to get the tweaked version of the Windows Gadget here (http://projects.karn.co.uk/files/IDNetBUM-v1.2.gadget).

There are workarounds to get sidebar gadgets working in windows 8 but they're supposedly replaced with Live Tiles. I'd certainly be interested in porting the gadget to Live Tiles but I was waiting on Windows 8.1 before thinking of upgrading. I might find some time to play with a Windows 8 VM at work at some point though :)

Seems I managed to find some spare time over the weekend.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=uk.co.karn.idnet

Its a separate app install to the old one (which I'll retire from the play store soon). You'll need to re-add the widget to your home screen as before but it now has the ability to grab the api key from the IDnet portal for you.

It should support previous versions of android but I've only had time to test it on 4.2.1 and 4.3. If you have any problems or have any suggestions feel free to post them here.

The source is backed up this time and may well be opened up should I have time to tidy it up a bit (and the OK from idnet).

I've just noticed a couple of bugs that I'm in the process of squashing now.

One you'll probably never notice: if you have more than one widget on your homescreen the configuration button (the cog) will take you to the configuration page for the last refreshed widget. The work around is to refresh the one you want to configure first before tapping the cog.

The other is probably a little more noticeable - I seem to have inadvertently added the usage for the current day twice...

I'll update this post when I've uploaded the fix to the play store (the windows 7 gadget is unaffected)

Update has been pushed to the play store. It'll take a few hours to get through to your devices (all 2 of you that have the new version :)x)

Unfortunately I'll be moving away from IDNet. My area has just been upgraded to FTTC and with BTs offering being so much cheaper and also allowing a home-move within the contract period (which I'm hoping to do in the next 6-8 months) my hands were pretty much tied.

What this means for the widget / gadget is that I'm not going to be able to effectively maintain them any longer.

Currently the android app source is on a private BitBucket repository and published on my own personal play store developer account. I'm happy to keep it there for the time being, but if I was to make the source repository for the widget public I'd still need to be the one to publish any updates to the play store. I'm happy to migrate the application to another developer account should someone offer to take on the maintenance.

As for the windows gadget, I should be able to upload the source to a suitable repository.

Given it's a benefit to their customers, I wonder if IDNet would be interested in taking it on?

Some apps are simply redirects/wrappers to webpages, so it's not necessarily overly expensive. Just a check that any future changes to the webpage are compatible with MS/Apple/Google phone OSs.

Thanks for all the effort you've put in to this tKe, it's been much appreciated. The Window widget has undoubtedly stopped my exceeding my limit many times. Good luck with your new connection :)

I've not opened it up to the public yet as I'm not sure what's happening with regards to publishing future versions to the play store. It's currently hosted in a private bitbucket git repository which I'm happy to give access to on an individual basis. And if anyone wants to step forward and maintain it I'm happy to transfer the app across to their play store developer account.

Does anyone have a copy of this gadget for windows that works with the current tariffs i.e. no off-peak/peek split? I found a link in this thread but it links to the split version.

Hi, sorry it took so long to reply - I'm not exactly active here much any more.

I've uploaded the last version of the windows gadget I was using here: https://drive.google.com/a/karn.co.uk/file/d/0By_HqdiHg2-_MHpwQVdmZ2xER2c/edit?usp=sharing
It supported single tariff if I remember correctly, by setting the off-peak limit to 0. I can't test it any more but it should work just fine.

Unfortunately the recent website changes seem to have broken the gadget which relies on the page www.idnet.net/phpscripts/bandwidth-csv.php.

That page now returns 404.

Just downloaded for me and configured on an old Vista PC. I think though you still need to have the Windows sidebar (now deprecated since W7), and it won't work on W10 anyway; and it's no longer maintained. Probably unnecessary too if you're on an unlimited allowance. The required key can be obtained from the address bar on the RSS feeds page once you log in, and the username is the same as your IDNet login name.
