Title: iPhone 4 jailbreak app goes live
Post by: Simon on Aug 02, 2010, 11:20:25
Jailbreakme, the iPhone utility that lets users run non-approved applications, has been released.

Developers said the new Jailbreakme 2.0 would work on all iPhones and iPod Touches running iOS4.  However, there are reports that iPhone owners are losing FaceTime and multimedia messaging services, as well as problems for iPad users.  The new utility comes a week after US regulators announced it was lawful to hack or jailbreak an iPhone.

I've still got the 3GS, so perhaps a little experimentation might be fun.

It won't be soon.  I've got Chris all week without a break, so I'm not going to have time for anything much else.

Quite possibly!

How long will the jailbreak app work for? It exploits an unpatched security hole in Safari, to jailbreak the phone apparently.

I'm not interested in third party apps, really.  All I want is to be able to use my own message and reminder tones.

But that's obviously illegal right. To have your own recordings on a phone you paid for without paying extra for the privileged.  :slap:
Wonder how long until you can get Android onto an Iphone! :D

iBerry, anyone?  ;D

Ben, you're right.  I've bought the thing, so I should be able to do what I bloody well like with it, within the law.  The ringtones I use are all either my own creations, or freely available on the web, so there are no copyright issues.  Why shouldn't I be allowed to use them without hacking the phone and therefore voiding the warranty?

I might like to see if you could "dual boot" the OS. As it uses flash media anyhow, perhaps partition a 16gb into two 8gb Iphones. With OS4 for texting and web browsing, and Android for the pritty animated backgrounds and ringtones.  :thumb:

I've decided it's too much like hard work just to change the ringtones, so I'm probably not going to bother.  There's other things I don't like about it as well, like the Home screen, and those silly bubbles in the SMS app.

Ermm - why not just buy a phone that doesn't need jailbreaking? That's what I did.

It's one of the things that baffles me about the loyalty to Apple hardware. The desire for freedom whilst actively settling for being locked down  :dunno:

I didn't realise that basics such as message tones couldn't be changed, Steve.  That's the sort of thing you don't find out till you've bought it.

I've got a custom ringtone on my 3GS and I've had it on there for over a year now - I'm guessing that something has changed to stop you creating you own ringtones since?
Title: Re: iPhone 4 jailbreak app goes live

It's the message tones, not the ringtone, Lance, particularly the email alert, which is very quiet, and there's no on screen notification either, when the phone is in standby.

The PDF being used for illicit purposes again... I never thought, when I worked for Adobe, that I'd read about corrupted fonts being used to unlock/infect machines.

Security flaw in Apple iPhones gives hackers control

The same flaw used to jailbreak Apple's iPhone and iPad could allow hackers to enslave the mobile devices, according to security firms.

The PDF flaw affects Apple's iOS, which also runs the iPod Touch, and could allow hackers to take complete control of a vulnerable device.

"Two vulnerabilities have been identified in Apple iOS for iPhone, iPad and iPod, which could be exploited by remote attackers to take complete control of a vulnerable device," said McAfee's David Marcus on the company's blog.

"The first issue is caused by a memory corruption error when processing Compact Font Format (CFF) data within a PDF document, which could be exploited by attackers to execute arbitrary code by tricking a user into visiting a specially crafted web page using Mobile Safari," he said.

"The second vulnerability is caused by an error in the kernel, which could allow attackers to gain elevated privileges and bypass sandbox restrictions."

According to McAfee's Marcus, these flaws were the same ones used by Jailbreakme to remotely jailbreak Apple devices.

FYI

The new Apple update (4.02) Fixes this issue by the way so be careful.  :thumb:

I agree 4.02 closes the off the potential pdf exploit so no jailbreak possible but cydia also have a patch to close the exploit once jailbroken. I also managed to change the root password via ssh.

If you've updated to 4.02 the answer is no,anything less you can. Although if you saved your SHSH blobs prior to updating to 4.02 you can go back to an earlier version i.e 4.02 to 4.01. The 4.02 was Apple's response to the pdf exploit so is of very little use anyway.
