EVERY site is slow for me, bar www.idnet.net and www.idnetters.co.uk

ODD? I mean, slower than dial-up slow.

Yes same slowness here.. although it's completely random as to which sites (or domain suffixes) are loading/not loading. I'm not using IDNET's DNS servers either.. (OpenDNS).

IDnet have reported a problem to BT, They say it seems to be a bandwidth/traffic issue.

Linx is causing issues.

Xylo report this :

QuoteLINX Routing Issues

Our monitoring has picked up some high latency and packet loss. This appears to be related to a problem at Linx.

We are investigating currently but only appears to be affecting the 224 peering LAN.

Quote2010-07-21 14:28: We are currently investigating a very high number of reports of extremely slow speeds.

We are in contact with BT's network incidents team to try and identify the cause of the problem.

Updates to follow shortly.

You might want to change the subject of this post Steve so its more clear for other people as its nothing to do with my connection  :)

Oh....

I wish I'd checked this forum.  I've just spent half hour on the phone to IDNet complaining about my slow internet.  They said there are no problems.  Clearly this thread changes that.

I get random bursts of speed and then back to slowness.  Think I'll just go out and enjoy the sunshine and wait for this to fix itself lol. ;D

Just come online a half hour ago and its like being stuck in treacle. Good job its a rest day in the Tour de France, can't have any slowdowns tomorrow with the most important stage of the race taking place.

Well here's a step into the twilight zone, during the outage my connection's gained wings.

Connection Speed    8128 kbps    448 kbps
Line Attenuation    29.0 db    17.0 db
Noise Margin    4.5 db    25 db

(http://www.speedtest.net/result/887007259.png) (http://www.speedtest.net)

Up until now, unless there's a problem, my connection delivers 6.32 MB/s without fail, at peak or off peak. It might deviate by as much as 0.01 (seriously) but it's been that stable since this line was installed. So where's the extra half megabyte come from and is this an early warning sign of impending doom?

Zen also confirm the LINX issue as resolved.

Noticed it at work this afternoon myself too.

A mangled port upgrade caused an outage at Linx yesterday.

A spokesman for Linx (the London Internet Exchange) said a routine port upgrade introduced a problem which caused processor usage in a router to surge, leading to instability on one of its LANs.

It costs more, I guess.
Title: Re: Slow Traffic

They supposedly have a dual vendor, dual LAN topology and encourage members to take at least a port on each to provide redundancy apparently.

https://www.linx.net/pubtools/topology.html

Well thats the theory anyway.

Might be better running a tracert (traceroute) that IP to see what route it is taking.

Put it up and we'll have a look.

My internet is really slow as well, I usually get about 6MB pretty constantly but the last few days it has all over the place. Down to just under 3MB at the moment. I was going to call idnet but it seems that they already know about it. Any idea when this is likely to be fixed?
Title: Re: Slow Traffic
Post by: Steve on Jul 23, 2010, 20:30:05
Not sure Pud with to regard 'fixing' do you know of a specific fault?
