Title: Mobile Broadband
Post by: psp83 on Jun 29, 2010, 12:30:20
Hi Guys & Girls.

What speeds do you get with your mobile broadband dongles / phones ?

I have a Three 3G dongle and get 3G & HSDPA with speeds around 2mb down and 350k up.

My iPhone on O2 can't even get a 3G signal  :(

Cool.. I'm looking for a better "mobile broadband" backup.. Three network sometimes slows right down and becomes unusable in this area.

Was looking at vodafone, they seem to be the best around this area for 3G / HSDPA

MIFI looks like something I could use when out and about.. Please do report back what you think..

But I will wait to I get one as a newer version is out July 2nd.

I've tried the MIFI at work it's giving me about 1.7 down and 1.6 up . The signal meter is not as optimistic as the USB dongle from Three and on occasions when it suggests no connection is available it will still connect. The wifi is claimed to connect 5 devices upto 10 metres away, certainly it managed to pass through a wall into the next room. So fairly positive except for the signal meter the battery is claimed to last about 6 hours

Interesting blog on multiple private wifi networks in close proximity, the fact that it's WDDC is only relevant in that there were over 500 private networks present including a few hundred Mifis.you end up destroying the network you were trying to create

The Mifi has worked really well today even when it says it can't connect to the Three network mobile broadband network I can usually get online,it's outperforming O2 in my location by a clear margin. So its useful for laptops,iTouch,iPad,PS3 and iPhone (as an alternative data carrier via wifi)

Don't believe it. It says they have good coverage here in Wrexham and it's average at best. You'd be better off searching around on mobile forums to see what actual users say, for your area.

No need to. My mate has a vodafone 3g dongle and he lives 5 mins away. But Three's MIFI is looking more useful to me.

Mine came already registered and with 1gb on it. Charge it up, turn it on and ready to use.

Only takes 2 hrs to fully charge by mains, battery last up to 5hrs.
