It works for some people and not for other. There is no harm in removing it as it is no longer needed.

If you have an NTE5 master socket, Steve (the bottom 2/3rds of the faceplate is detachable), then it's worth removing the faceplate and connecting your router to the test socket behind it. Note the figures, particularly line speed, attenuation and noise on the d/s side. Then repeat the exercise with the faceplate back in position, and the router plugged into it. If there's a big difference, the internal wiring in the house is introducing noise (and, possibly, attenuation) - when you take the faceplate off and use the test socket, you completely disconnect all internal wiring and connect, instead, directly to the exchange pair.

Removing the ring wire is always worthwhile, at worst it will have no effect, at best it will cut the noise pickup, which should result in a higher sync speed. Your throughput will not follow immediately, though, you need to maintain the higher speed for three days before your profile will increase.

The DSL Filters will "take over" if you like the function of the "ring wire" (If its needed) - so you mayaswell disconnect them in your socket.

Ive tired this (test socket) and nothing changed...but for somepeople it can be a dramatic change!
