A psychologist has criticised the use of computers in primary and nursery schools, saying premature exposure to technology can cause long-term damage to children's learning ability.
ICT is increasingly used in schools at younger ages, but computer use among early learners can impair concentration, according Dr Aric Sigman - the same psychologist who previously wrote about the affects of social networking, sparking the Daily Mail's "Facebook causes cancer" headline.

Odd. Earlier work seemed to suggest that the use of PCs helped concentration, particularly among the more shy. I can't cite the report, but I know it was quite influential at the time.
The only problem with computer use at such young ages is, perhaps, it stops the young mind from reaching out for other mental stimuli. It may also take away a bit of that wonderful mental imagination from books and radio.
Just my personal view and observations from many youngsters who have been exposed to computers at a young age.
I sometimes think that seeing things in action rather than research is a better way of learning about young children in education and life.
Interesting point, Alf, but hasn't TV already done the damage before they get to school?
Is it the same thinking as in the 70's, where the use of calculators were banned?
It's just one shrink's opinion, isn't it? As has been said, it wasn't long ago that computers were considered essential for learning.
Premature exposure to technology? Oh no! We must go outside and camp by fires and hunt food until they are 14!
Wait, what?
At least they'd learn to whittle that way. :)
Some people can whittle on.
Moi?
I'm not mentioning any names ;D
;D
Whiitle while you Wok! I had to you know. ;D
Of course you did, Alf. ;D Is that a non-stick wok? If so, you wouldn't need to whittle as it needs no sticks. :hehe:
One of the first jobs I did after leaving school was whittling sticks for a thatcher. As jobs go it really sucked :(
Margaret could be a tough master. ;D
