Fine here.  Can you post your router stats and a BT Speedtest?

Perhaps you lost sync for some reason.

Try doing a speedtest by going to http://www.speedtester.bt.com and post the results.

Idnet seems fine at present its probably a local issue i.e some where between you and the exchange

Mine with 8MB adslmax

You are not alone, I have had the same dire speeds for @ an hour, yet all other stats are fine and pings at 12ms and no loss of synch/connection. Suddenly 5 minutes ago speeds were back to normal.

If it continues throughout the week my guess would be local exchange congestion http://usertools.plus.net/exchanges/ may give some info but it is not always up to date. Otherwise check with support.

Steve your now begining to sound like one of those AOL techie guys I left behind ;D I had that from them for over 3 months about the exchange congestion however IDNet proved them wrong over the last 3 weeks Ive had constant speeds of over 6000Kbps, so how can that be congestion, dont think so?
Well at least thats the way I see it :fingers:

Just ran another trace

Tracing route to idnet.com [212.69.36.10]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

  1    <1 ms    <1 ms    <1 ms  my.router [192.168.1.1]
  2    12 ms     *       12 ms  telehouse-gw4-lo2.idnet.net [212.69.63.99]
  3    12 ms    12 ms    12 ms  telehouse-gw3-g0-1-400.idnet.net [212.69.63.243]

  4   165 ms   273 ms    12 ms  redbus-gw2-g0-1-331.idnet.net [212.69.63.5]
  5    13 ms    13 ms    13 ms  redbus-gw1-fa2-0-300.idnet.net [212.69.63.225]
  6    13 ms    12 ms    12 ms  www.idnet.net [212.69.36.10]

Trace complete.

as there are a few people seeing issues it is not exchange based.

This is the third post with odd speeds tonight although the other two have improved. I've had a trawl round for BT incidents and all I can find is this  http://status.zensupport.co.uk/index.php?serviceid=5&incidentid=1822&simple=1. Can you follow the advice given to Rudds and we'll take it from there i.e router stats and BT speedtest please.

My speeds have also fallen away tonight.

I noticed lots of buffering in video streaming.  Something that never usually happens. (the reason for coming to the forums)  A number to tests later and the best I can get is 1.31Mb/s.

Previously a rock solid 7Mb/s for the past 16 months.

Its a Speedtouch 585 v6.  I also have a BT voyager 2100 router I can set up.  is there a particular router anyone would recommend??

My speeds have recovered now though - showing a little over 7 mb/s so I guess the reasoning that it was a BT issue tonight is the real answer.

I'd be happy if it was - I was just concerned as a new Idnet customer that the evening peak speeds would be as bad as my previous provider - well they weren't as bad as Pipex but heading in that direction and I guess I was freaking out a bit - all the help on the Forum kinda assured me that this was not the "usual" service from IDnet though.

Thanks for all your help - I'm still reading!

IDNet don't throttle or shape, and evening speeds are always as fast as day as they don't over subscribe, they really are not like other ISP's but I can see how you would ponder on that  :)

The Speedtouch is fine for your connection I'd stick with that. To add to Gary's post I've not seen any congestion on IDNet's network since the hostlink went live sometime ago, however the odd user will still see local BT exchange congestion which is often manifest in the early to mid evening periods.

I had also had a few minor problems earlier on, somewhere around 9.00pm I'd say. I was unable to conduct any tests but there seemed to be a lot of lag spikes on my connection. Everything seems ok now except my throughput is down by around 20% which is unusual as it's normally rock solid at any time of day or night.

Which because of the vagaries of Adsl can  happen on any speed tester including speedtester.bt.com which has in the past insisted my throughput was 10 x the Max rate.

Speedtest, net and Broadband Max testers consistently give me the same results for my line, and I use them to prove a stable speed, not the actual speed whatever that really is.

Look at any tester that shows pings via different browsers and the results are very different. Change from Windows Command prompt ping command to the equivalent in a Linux Konsole and yet again we see different results for the same IP address, Linux pings are always lower than Windows.

Hi All,

I'm still having problems although they may not be related - my speed did recover last night to a little above 7 mb/s and I thought that was the end of it.  At 1am I did another BT speed test and my IP profile had dropped to 2000 kb/s.

I did speak to tech support this morning and was re-assured that this will be due to the 10 day stabilisation period but having done a check a few minutes ago nothing has changed yet and I am fairly concerned. . .

My latest speed results are below - anyone any ideas?

Test1 compri   Download  Speed
   1767 Kbps

0 Kbps   2000 Kbps
Max Achievable Speed
Download speed achieved during the test was - 1767 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds  is 400-2000 Kbps.
Additional Information:
Your DSL Connection Rate :8128 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 2000 Kbps

Many Thanks

Don't worry, that's just the line settling. If the profile stays that way for more than a day or so, give support another ring as they might be able to kick it (it would suggest a stuck profile if it stays at 2M).

Post by: Sirian on Jun 08, 2010, 12:44:46
Thanks Rik - I'd like to give it a kick.  I'm just a little freaked out as I have not encountered this before - for the first few days my connection was fairly buzzing so a shock to see it like this.  It has only been like this since 1am so I'm happy to be patient for another day or so to give things time to settle.  Gives me time to trawl around the forum and "learn" about what is going on. . . - Hey great forum and almost instant help and support - much appreciated!

Title: Re: Whats happening???

Hi Rik,

I generally turn off the router when I turn off the PC - I did get booted just after I came on line 20 minutes ago or so when the router booted itself.  Is the advice to leave the router on all the time??

Title: Re: Whats happening???
Post by: Steve on Jun 08, 2010, 12:50:10
I think looking at the router stats he's plugged directly into the exchange anyway ;D  (downstream attenuation of 8db)
Title: Re: Whats happening???
Post by: Steve on Jun 08, 2010, 12:56:26
Best to leave the router on 24/7. Power downs may be seen as instability and the response by the exchange equipment is to increase the noise margin and as a consequence lower your sync. Your fortunate that you are near to the exchange so that its not happened. Exceptions,if your supplied by overhead cables best to turn off during a thunderstorm.
Title: Re: Whats happening???
Post by: Rik on Jun 08, 2010, 12:57:57
Hi Sirian

Can you leave the router permanently connected, please, the line management software needs to see how stable your line is, so 24/7 is the order of the day. Brian has just had your target noise margin reset from 9db to 6db, that in itself will have little effect on your sync speed but it will, hopefully, trigger a profile shift. Resist all urges to re-boot the router. ;)

If you see it dropping out still, we need to take a look at your phone wiring, so let us know.

Glad you like the forum.  :thumb:
Title: Re: Whats happening???
Post by: Sirian on Jun 08, 2010, 13:06:22
Ok - I'm happy to leave the routed on 24/7.  I will have to turn off one more time to plug into a different socket so I can still turn off the PC - but I'll leave that for now and do it later this evening.  The router has never re-booted itself (except the one occasion I mentioned) in over two years.

You are correct I am very close to the exchange - could see it from my sittingroom if there weren't houses in the way - about 600 meters or so.

Again thanks for all the help and advice - I should try and get some work done but the forum chat is much more stimulating!!

Thought I would post these stats - everyone on the forum (and James from Tech Support) was totally correct - things did recover in the night. . .

Test1   Download  Speed
   6202 Kbps

0 Kbps   7150 Kbps
Max Achievable Speed
Download speed achieved during the test was - 6202 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds  is 600-7150 Kbps.
Additional Information:
Your DSL Connection Rate :8096 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM)

and I have enjoyed a massive learning curve - especially about keeping my router turned on 24/7.  We live and learn and if we don't learn we die.

Looks like we are having a few problems again tonight. Slow, fast slow again very erratic.

Could this be due to the bad weather over the last few days, as I said before I was very impressed with the constant 6.4 's I have been getting anytime of the day.

Best speed attained this evening....................... has been as low as 1.2mb

Martin told me a couple of weeks ago mate he used to go to filbert street apparently, Tigers have had a really good season shame the City lost on penalties in playoffs but that's football.

So is it that in these rainy evenings more people are frequenting the internet (causing congestion) and on the nicer evenings less so in effect the last couple of weeks that's why we got really good constant speeds, or am I completely wrong :dunno:  At least we are not down to AOL's levels of 0.2 mb if you were lucky sometimes ;D

As Steve says, watch what happens when the world cup starts. If speeds turn dire, it's exchange congestion without a doubt.

With 20 CN or adslmax the connection from BT to IDNet was by a system of central pipes (fixed capacity)these were very expensive and I think rented on a yearly basis. The hostlink is 21CN WBC technology and replaces the centrals, it is of variable capacity and will allow a short term (3 month) expansion.

I'd just block the feed Miriam, stop the mass destruction of brain cells.

Guilty as charged. I follow the round ball as well as the proper shaped ball!! Rugby balls are easier to catch for us co-ordinationally challenged!  ;)  as for Big Brother if we traffic shaped I would definately shape that - it would be for your own good!

Oh no  :eek4: now I have given the game away sorry Martin LOL

Things looking good in good old Kibby tonight :thumb:

So it's official. IDNet 'We don't traffic shape. The only shaping we do is that of getting the football into the correct one.'  ;D
Oh, and when it comes to BT and BBC and the internet streaming of TV. When the entire country moves over from broadcast to internet streaming... then what? The net dies and BT goes "We had no idea this would happen"?  :slap:

I'd be willing to wager that 21CN has been designed for the current use level of the net and as has been said when we do switch to streaming there will be mad scrambling by BT to upgrade elements.
