I though the iPad was Big, but look at this picture
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/10259552.stm
;D
Edit, the BBC have taken the picture off of their site, It was Steve Jobs being dwarfed by a phone.
;D
Its now on the Apple site (http://www.apple.com/iphone/)
Looks just as boring as the current one.
I quite like the design of the old one not sure about this one though.
I quite like it, probably can see myself getting it as well, ordering can start on the 15th.
;D

I studied Navigation theory as part of my trade training, included in that was weeks of gyro theory. As far as I'm aware a laser gyro can only give you pitch, roll, yaw and vertical movement, what are the other 2 axis that make up the six axis, Mr Jobs talks of?

As far as I know the word "Sixaxis" (contraction of "six axis" for the directional movements) is a palindrome, for Sony. I think they are using connectivity as part of it Glenn for Apple.
I'm curious about their request for the hotspots be turned off for a demo to work properly. Does this mean the iphone can't cope when it detects more than a few?

Probably not the final version of the OS Niall, it's still not complete so there may have been reasons, its not released till the 21st I believe so there may have been some tweaking left to do.

I know, me too, Gary. I've resisted the iPhone so far, but I'm sure one day, I will crack. I just want to try out the SE Xperia X10, the HTC Desire, and the Nokia N8 first. ;)
Looks like existing owners will get a limited time upgrade offer
So they should, given there's probably nothing wrong with their existing handsets.
Sell you one ;D
Mmmmm.....
This is the phone I'm buying my daughter for her 16th birthday and for hopefully passing her GCSEs.
This is the phone that's going to put a world of hurt on my wallet :'(
For some time to come, probably, Zap. ;)
I've got to ask, Gary. What tune is your avatar playing?
He could say anything, and we'd be none the wiser, Rik. ;D
I know, but it's got me intrigued. :)

Thanks. ;D None the wiser but at least I know. ;)

I thought from the opening, that they were going into "They're coming to take me away". ;D
Well, thats errr different.
It was. I always felt the singer sounded a bit like Bob Monkhouse. :)
No reason why not.
He's been resurrected once for that strange ad for a worthwhile cause.
It was weird, wasn't it, albeit technically clever.
Yes
Here's (http://www.giveafewbob.org/view-the-bob-film.php) a link for anyone that wants to see it again.
It had quite an impact really, didn't it. It certainly made me think.
Me too.
Took me by surprise the first time I saw it on TV (was the intent I suppose) but it made me think about how technically clever it was but also about the message.
Exactly, first we took in the technical brilliance, then the message hit home. A brilliant ad in the end.
I fear we have strayed off topic.
It's what we do here, Mitch. ;)
Indeed and if it had been any other forum I'd probably have a slap on the wrist by now.
We regard threads as conversations, we answer the main point, then drift off into other issues, coming back to the main point as required. We feel it's more natural, and friendly, than tightly regimented topics. :)
I have to agree there.
It's not for everyone, Mitch, but most people seem to like it that way, and it does feel more natural. The analogy I've used in the past is that if a bunch of friends are having a drink in a pub and someone comes in to ask directions, they'll stop, give him their full attention and help then, when he leaves, drift back into conversation. If he comes back again, they'll stop again and so on.
And those that don't like it don't have to be here :)
I've got some 6 months of my contract left,so the max buy out is 6x £20 /month, it will depend whether I'm a platinum, gold or silver customer as to how much this reduced by i.e Silver one month rebate ,Platinum 6 months rebate. Or you can buy a pay and go. I'm tempted to swap for a basic phone in 6 months time and look at the iPad.
Going back to the man in the pub asking directions, if he comes in a third time, we tell him to either buy a round, or piss off and get a map. ;D

The ipad has no real hold on me, a p[hone is more important, ill do the 6mhs contract deal and rebate and get the iPhone 4, I'll look at the iPad in a year to see how its improved.

Nothing to do with the iPhone as such. I imagine the organisers simply didn't provide enough bandwidth for the number of connections. Given that it was a computer conference you'd think they would realise usage would be heavy, but there we are.

That makes sense. Mobile hotspots like the mobile phone repaters used at events can become quickly saturated if not enough bandwidth was given in the first place
If any of the Blackberry/iPhone/HTC fans on O2 are planning a trip to London you'll be pleased to know that apparently Nokia Siemens Networks have completed network upgrades that should increase data and voice capacity.
You can read more here (http://mobilenewscwp.co.uk/News/504855/o2_upgrades_london_network.html)
I heard Simon was driving up immediately. :)
On a mobile dedicated forum I am a mod on (which is slowly drowning in spam because the admins won't implement anti-spam defences) we had a lot of people complaining about O2's network in London since the iPhone was launched and as you seem to have a healthy mobile data user base here I thought I'd mention it.
We're relatively lucky with spam, Mitch, but we do have quite a lot of automatic barriers in the way, plus we watch the new members IP addresses like hawks. :)
So do myself and the mods on the other forum but alas we are fighting a losing battle.
Shall we show them how it's done. ;)
If you can get them to take notice which despite trying to message them and placing threads in the mods area threatening to quit en masse then good luck to you.
I hardly log in there now as there are only a handful of genuine posters.
Get me an admin flag, we'll soon change all that. :)
What forum software are they using, Mitch? If it's PhpBB, I'm not surprised they are being spammed.
VBulletin.
I think they offer their own support, but not sure if they charge extra for it.
Probably. :(
You used to be able to purchase it with different levels of support package, ranging from zero, to full phone support, I believe. We once looked into it for Pals, then we found Sam. :)
And they all lived happily ever after... ;)
Yeah, right. ::)

I used to run a small VB forum for the Graduate School here and I think VB sold out to an investment company a while back. There was a huge uproar on the users forums over the changes in the T&Cs and, if memory serves me, one of the original founders of VB left acrimoniously.
Not clear what's happening now since the Uni introduced some super whizzy 'do-it-all' software which incorporated forums and I bowed out. Since this effectively meant that the forum was controlled by the University - which proceeded to stamp on any criticism - rather than by the postgrads, the forum fizzled out.
Well, that shows how long ago it was that I looked into vB. ;D
Bet it was Moodle
Looks like O2 are scrubbing unlimited data on smartphones from the 1st of October. :eyebrow:
http://shop.o2.co.uk/new-iphone/tariffs.html
They've realised they cant sustain it (as no mobile network can)
Unlimited has always been a misnomer, imo.
It has as every network has finite capacity and unfortunately there are those that will abuse facilities but then moan because its slow so am not surprised O2 are dropping it.
I just wish the ASA would stop companies using the term when it isn't true.
I've been running vBulletin based forums for many years and I've never had a problem with spam. The simplest way to deal with most of it is to add a new user profile field like so:
AdminCP > User Profile Fields > Add New User Profile Field
Title: Human Verification Question
Description: The opposite of north is?
Default Value: (null)
Field Required: Yes, at registration and profile updating
Field Editable by User: Only at registration
Private Field: Yes
Field Searchable on Members List: No
Show on Members List: No
Regular Expression: ^[south|SOUTH]$
You should also check that reCAPTCHA is either installed if it's an old version of the forum software or active if it's more recent.
Thanks for the suggestion Zap but I have no admin access to implement and the admins don't listen and I'm beginning to think don't have a clue how to operate the software correctly.
Ah well, it's up to them I guess. It would take admin 30 seconds to implement that. Tell them I'll do it for a plate of sausages ;D
Great idea, Zap. :)
Admin has started reversing legitimate bans on spammers I and other mods have imposed so I've decided enough is enough.
Sounds wise, Mitch, you're just going to fight a frustrating, but losing, battle.
It looks like my old LG Viewty. Oh, and it has slightly less of the options and services and tools of that phone. Oh how I wish I had not broken that beautiful phone. :shake:
Well, if you will hit them with hammers, Ben. ;D :out:
