Does anyone know or have any free (open source) software that will rip dvd's to avi or mpeg2 format?
I want to put all my dvd's onto a usb drive so I can pack them away and have more room for blurays.
You could try a programme called Handbrake: http://handbrake.fr/
I've used it several times from re-encoding video to a iPhone friendly format but not for ripping from a CD. A quick look at the interface and it looks to be able to do it though.
I use WinAVI, but it isn't free, I'm afraid.
I use DVDVideoSoft (http://www.dvdvideosoft.com/) which is free to do conversions (although I haven't personally used the DVD to avi aspect). You can download just the program that does the function you want or the whole suite in one go. The conversions that I have tried have worked quite well.
I use ubuntu + dvd::rip and devede for anything like that

Another vote for dvd::rip on ubuntu. I had to buy three different software packages on Windows to do what dvd::rip does for free :)

I'm just trying out dvd::rip, so far it seems a great app.
DVDFab and DVDShrink both moaned about the copy protection and wouldn't rip it, dvd::rip hasn't moaned once yet.
dvd::rip on Ubuntu relies on a couple of libraries being installed as part of Ubuntu. These libraries then allow dvd::rip and other programs to 'see beyond' the DVD encryption to allow the user to make personal backups. I'm not sure if dvd:rip automatically installs these but they are open source and freely available.
It installs most but I had to install libdvdread4.
But I have come across a problem thou, any dvd I try to rip I get the following message towards the end.
It seems that transcode ripping stopped short. The movie has (a large number) frames, but only (a large number) were ripped. This is most likely a problem with your transcode/libdvdread installation, resp. a problem with this specific DVD.
I use k3b in Ubuntu to rip my DVD's. It is a KDE program but installs fine under Gnome desktop. In addition to libdvdread4 I had to install the libdvdcss2 library as well.
k3b only rips, as I prefer to retrieve the VOB's and process them seperately.
I'm not sure if installing the libdvdcss2 library would help your problem.

And I should have of course said that I use k9copy to rip the DVD (not k3b which is the burner). Doh!
I've resulted to using k9copy myself, saving the files onto a usb drive then using win avi to convert to avi/mpeg.
Tried DVD:Rip the the other night and although I have libdvdread4 and libdvdcss2 installed I have not had any luck getting it to work.
