Currently gettig a stable (yes I know... I did say stable) 5.5mb. however tonight I'm downloading patches for software, they average around 600mb each, from a UK server, with a 1000mbs line. I'm getting 28k downloads. pings are way up at 72ms. Gonna take me all night at this rate, tried one at 6am, same thing. 28k

as you can see between me and idnet is where the pings increase. never below 48ms. online gaming, forget it. lag disconnects. impossible.
1) That server is on Entanet which is notorious for traffic shaping at peak times.
2) The pings are consistent over the entire trace,NOT just to IDNet.
3) Server download speeds vary with load.If plenty of other people are after the same patches this is exactly what you would see. I get ISO's for Linux distros,during american peak times the downloads are @50kbps at best, try when they are asleep and I get 800kbps from the same server.
4) Your first hop..... your router is 8ms,that should be 1ms for all 3 results.
I would get a BT speed test, your router stats (has anything changed there?) and those pings/traces and email them to support for their comment.
I have tried before, but generally the response is to do with BT and unfortunately the monster that BT is, in holding this country back technology wise, nothing gets done becasue I meet the ludicrous minimum standards that the ridiculous BT speedtester is set to. Here's a tracert to IDnet, as you can see in the last one is misses out 1 hop and in this one it misses out 1 hop. The 1st hop was a blip I think as all three are less that 1ms
I'm not blaming IDnet, just wondering if anything was up. obviously not, just my "acceptable" line

I find that most servers in the UK on Gamershell are always slow. I use the download option for Holland if there is one available. It's been a while since I've used them though so they might not offer the same amount of mirrors as they did.
