Title: Couple of question on smtp server
Post by: Tony Yarwood on May 15, 2010, 00:57:44
Hi all

Sorry to bother you all with this but all my problems seem to come at the weekend!

I've got a couple of question regarding email, incoming is fine, problems with outgoing.  Do I use my IDNet user name and password for smpt.idnet.net or do I use my IDNet email addy and password.

I take it that the outgoing port is 25, does it require a secure authentication?

Thanks in advance.

Best regards

Tony

Hi, you use your email address and password. Outgoing port is 25 and you don't need secure authentication.

Mornin' all

Is sending of mail somehow tied in to my IP? The reason for asking is; unmasked it's working OK but I soon as I connect to my VPN server I keep getting server unreachable.

Best regards

If you're using IDNet's SMTP server over VPN, you may have to use authenticated SMTP, Tony. Port 587, no SSL.

Hi Rik

Thanks for that, still can't seem to get it to work :( Reason I want it is that I'm abroad quite a bit and need a mail server that works for me while I'm away.

Best regards

Have you tried it without using the VPN, Tony? That will establish whether the basic setup is working.

Yes, without VPN it's working.

That suggests the VPN is the sticking point then. I don't have the experience to advise on that, so if no-one else can help, I suggest you contact support on Monday. I can confirm that I use auth-smtp when travelling and have never had a problem.

Thanks for that, has to be me, (usually is!). Guess I'll have to give them a call on Mon.

Thanks for your time and trouble.

When on the VPN, can you not send your IDNet email via the companies mail server?

Maybe the company is blocking the use of outside servers?

What VPN are you using, Cisco?

Question: I am not able to send email using Microsoft Outlook. Is Port 25 blocked?

Answer:
SMTP on port 25 is blocked to prevent abuse. Web based emails like gmail and yahoo mail should still work. You should still be able to receive email with no issues.

Rik reckoned port 587 should work.
When you're abroad there must be a port that works for sending

587 does work from any ISP, Tony, it's the VPN which seems to be blocking it.

Hmm, somethings afoot, guess it'll have to wait till Mon.

Thanks Rik and Glenn for all your help.
