Title: Odd profile issue
Post by: Rik on Mar 22, 2007, 10:01:07
My current sync speed is 3104. According to my sticky :), that should give me a profile of 2500. However, I just got to the BT tester, where the profile was shown at 3000, throughput was ~2600, better than I would expect from a 2500 profile, not as good as I've previously had from a 3000 profile.

Are BT moving the goal posts, I wonder?

Could be, that profile coudlnt be closer to your sync speed, thats for sure! ;)

Max has been around for just under the year now, so I'm wondering whether, with the experience BT now have of the product, they are going to step profiles in smaller increments, eg 250 rather than 500. That would fit with the speed I'm seeing. Of course, if they are doing it, they haven't told the speed tester. :)

It would be better if the increments were smaller! BT will probably update the speedtester by 2011 or something like that!

I agree, Lance, the profile increments are much too large at the moment, a 32k drop in sync can cost you a 500k drop in profile. That's crazy and, I suspect, not technically valid. It smacks rather of the huge margins BT built into fixed-rate products. If they moved to 200k increments, I can't see that it would cause any problems, and it would make for a smoother service for the user.

What speeds do you achieve though?

Simon was kind enough to take a look at this for me. It seems I have a stuck profile, but it's stuck high, first one he's ever seen. We agreed not to tell BT. :)

Excellent!

It's not a bad thing, I must confess. I do wish BT would reduce the 500k increment on profiles though.

Indeed so do I. It's only a small increase in speed but every little helps!

It does for us humble 2-3000k profile dwellers.
