Title: Spam - new pattern this week
Post by: Rik on Apr 09, 2010, 11:54:06
I've noticed this week that the spam I've been getting, not a huge amount, has started asking for receipts - not something I've seen before. Have I been lucky, or is this a new twist to identify live boxes?

I don't get any spam through IDNet but there has been an increase via my Yahoo UK account. I just look at the headings of that spam (don't open them) and then delete them so wouldn't know if they ask for receipts.

Outlook responds to items in the inbox when you try to delete, Noreen.

When you delete an email where the sender has a requested a receipt notification, Outlook puts up a nag screen asking if you wish to send one :)

I presume that you mean that you are prompted for a receipt to be sent when you try to delete Rik and therefore have the option to decline to send one. Is it possible to set up a rule to automatically delete e-mails from unknown senders which request a receipt ?

We are having receipt requests on spam too, it's obviously the latest craze.

An awful lot of people permit automatic responses

Me too Rik, it seems to be latest wheeze, I just delete and block sender, but another will follow next day with a different sender  , I'll just keep doing it untill they get fed up, most are linked to a line of text gobbledegook with a Viagra add to finish with. 8-)

That's why I wanted to have Windows Mail in Win7, it has a Block list for International Top Level Domains, just tick the ones you don't want and Mr.Lombo, solicitor to the queen of Togo automatically gets deleted before he starts  ;D  You also choose to "Never send/respond to receipt requests".

Works very well when you also block GB

Possibly, John, but as this is all coming in on the forum email address I'm reluctant to delete mail from unknown senders as it may be a genuine mail from a member.

Those aren't doing it yet, Gary, it's the blue pill, story telling type that are causing the problem.

It's because we have to advertise the address publicly for people to contact us in an emergency, Ray.

Indeed, Rik, at least my antispam programme picked both of them up.  :)

It is not just the Idnet email addys that are suffering, I use half a dozen domains for email and they are all getting this stuff now.

I understand now, Rik. I have Windows Mail with it set up to never send receipts.

I didn't mean to imply it was an IDNet issue, Alan, but rather it's caused by the publication of a contact email address for forum staff, in case anyone gets locked out, for example. Because of it being 'out there', it attracts spam that simply doesn't happen with the rest of my IDNet addresses.

If Outlook can do that, I haven't worked out how. :)

95% of spam doesn't get past MailWasher for me, so I rarely see it, but haven't had any return receipt requests, and would never automate it.

Do the genuine forum emails get through?
Title: Re: Spam - new pattern this week
Post by: Simon on Apr 09, 2010, 18:34:17
What genuine forum emails?  I always get notifications of PMs, etc.  Mailwasher is a manual process.  It highlights what it thinks is spam, based on white / black lists, and prepares them for deletion from the server.  A quick glance before hitting the 'Process' button is all that is required, and as I've been using it for years, I now have quite a comprehensive data base of filters.

The ones from people who can't login or have problems joining? The ones I send to test the account?

They're forwarded to my main IDNet account.

I did not either but I used the online help and discovered the process, which I have now done.

I've been getting spam for the past 3 or 4 weeks, routed through 1 IDNet account, even blacklisting the account in question hasn't stopped the mail arriving.

It is, I don't know if support can contact the account holder, to let them know of a possible security problem?
