Title: adsl2 stats
Post by: sobranie on Mar 27, 2010, 20:34:18
I wish the exchange would settle down. Here's some stats from 14Feb. onwards.  I  have had d/l speeds of 23200+ some evenings but didn't record the stats. snr usually hovers around 6db but drops to 4.8 when d/l shoots past 23000. Have rebooted the router when speeds get a bit silly and snr drops back to normal. Read as date, D/L speed, IP Profile.

13feb,20187,18000
14feb,20297,18000
15feb,16921,18000
19feb,18037,17000
21feb,17517,17000
22feb,17003,17000
25feb,17614,17000
8mar, 18431,16000
9mar, 17226,17000
21mar,17621,16000
22mar,17025,16000
24mar,18230,18000
25mar,16261,16000

Using a dg834gv5.
Is this normal behaviour?
All stats taken from bt speed tester.

It's not normal, you'll need to hand your line to me for safe disposal

I'd guess that at those speeds you are pushing the very limits of technology hence the fluctuations but that is a guess.

Here's an update (around 10 mins ago)

D/L speed 16837
IP profile 16000.
att 22db
snr 6db

dsl connection rate (router) 19623 down/1187 up.

..... and this is supposed to be peak time????

Zen test files come in at 1.7Mbs btw.

NB: I'm around 1/2 mile from the exchange so I'm presuming I've got the adsl2 cabinet to myself at the mo.

Certainly rate adaptive

I'm not quite sure what you're asking, Rick. As Steve says, the service is rate adaptive, so will vary according to conditions, eg noise or crosstalk. It's likely to be at its slowest at peak time. As you'll have noticed, the BT tester gets confused easily, reporting d/l speeds higher than the profile, which may be caused by the AV software you use. There are no ADSL2 cabinets, btw, all the changes are at the exchange. It's only when we get to fibre that cabinets become of interest.

Little concerned that d/l speeds sometimes go through the roof and snr drops.  During the night the snr dropped to 4.2 at one stage with a d/l of 23000+.  adsl2 takes some getting used to compared with my previous rock solid connection which never seemed to vary.

It's way more sensitive, Rick, and will vary more as a result. I wouldn't worry about 4.2db/23000k though. :)

I was looking at the DrayTek forum yesterday and there are a number of posts about stability on ADSL2.

A couple ,obviously suppliers had set up users on DrayTek gear with ADSL2 and had seen some odd issues. The system seems to be much more prone to interference problems and some found they needed to change firmware to solve their difficulties.

DrayTek routers and modems are usually extremely stable so it seems that ADSL2 brings with it some questionable traits.

There were a lot of issues with Draytek and ADSL2+ when BT rolled it out, Dorset. I thought that Draytek had fixed them with firmware updates. Oddly enough, the same sort of thing happened when Max was introduced.

I think they did with the current 2820 models.  If you have one of the previous 2800s I believe you are out of luck.
Zyxels have similar problems.  You need the latest firmware if you are using ADSL2+.  However which firmware goes with which model, since there are sometimes 'special purpose' variants some of which leak onto the general market, is something only the people in Taiwan understand.
