Title: Will my noise margin drop ?
Post by: old Bill on Mar 16, 2007, 10:09:29
Well since I last posted about my line things have improved a lot. I now have a nice steady connection with no drops. The only things which were changed were BT changed my filtered Face plate as they said the old one was faulty. I brought a Netgear DG834N which seems to suit my line.(I miss all the fancy stats but that cant be helped.) Because I was having problems my noise margin was increased to 9 which has reduced my sync rate. Now that my line has settled down will my noise margin drop back to 6 or should I think about having the interleaving turned off ?

Afaik, Bill, noise margin doesn't automatically reduce. Give support a call and they can arrange for it to be done. However, you my lose your current stability, so before doing so, it might be worth monitoring your noise margin for a while, especially at night - in the worst case, I see a 7db drop in margin, hence for me, 9db is better. Turning off interleaving will reduce your latency, but may introduce more errors, so it's a bit of a coin toss judgement.

I knew it was to good to last. My new router has just died. It now has to be sent back to DABS. I should have kept my mouth shut. :'(. What do I get next ? Thinking of going back to a speedtouch 585 only thing is my last one of those died as well.

You seem to have the kind of relationship with ADSL, Bill, as I do with Evesham. I can, but don't want to, believe the luck you are having - is it possible that there's a problem with your mains going over-voltage? How did the two routers die, were there any common events attached?

Untill I get my replacment router I am trying my old Speedtouch just so I have a connection. I have reset it so that hopefully it will clear out the problems it was having. The only downside is that it came from Idnet preconfigured and the stats screen is password protected. I cant rember what the password is. Can anyone help please ?

Try your login name, Bill.

Thanks for trying. Alas I am still locked out. Looks like I will have to give C/S a call on Monday

Sorry, Bill. I had heard that they used the login name, might be worth trying your login password as an alternative, with your login name as the router login name.

I called C/S a couple of days ago and asked for the interleaving to be switched off. This was done yesterday but my line was that unstable that I called them back and asked for it to be turned back on. Now one good thing from doing that is that it has reset my noise margins and my sync speed is higher. Now at the moment (touch wood) I have a nice steady and fast connection with no drops. The last test will be tonight to see if it holds connection when my noise margin drops in the evening.
