Title: Me and my mad new machine
Post by: Rik on Mar 14, 2007, 15:36:21
I'm still (I keep getting interrupted!) setting up my new desktop machine, XP Pro.

I use Classic Windows look and start menu. On my other machines, I can drag menu items around within their sub-folders from the start button, to have them in the order I want (having created the original folder structure in Explorer, with the All users Docs & Settings). On the new machine, they will re-arrange themselves periodically into alphabetical order and cannot be moved by drag'n'dop. In order to reset the menus, I have to go into Taskbar > Properties > Start Menu >Customise. That frees up the drag and drop (no changes need to be made) and, once re-arranged, the menus will stay in order for a while, but then something triggers the re-arrangement and locking.

I've not been able to isolate the cause. Have I missed a setting somewhere?

Does this help: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/177482
or am I missing the point?

In theory, that's the exact opposite of my problem, Jupiter - I don't want them in alphabetical order. However, that registry key could be the cause, so I'm off to poke in the bowels. Thanks. :)

You just can't stop feeding the lines can you?  Think I'd better leave it alone though.

Probably wise. :) That key doesn't seem to exist in XP on any of my machines... Computers, don't you just love them.  ::)

Here's a thread that discusses exactly your problem:

Hope it helps.

But I've just noticed it's Win 2K. Still, might give a clue.

Thanks, Jupiter. Had a quick look, thought "what are they going on about"? :) I'll read some more when I've sorted another problem with the machine, the 18x DVD burners don't want to go faster than 1x <sigh>.

I just had a feeling about this machine before I even ordered it.  ::)

UPDATE

For those who wish to enjoy a good laugh, check out my post in Rant'n'Rave. Seems Evesham knew the DVD burners wouldn't work properly when they sold me the machine.

Guess who's invoking the Sale and Supply of Goods Act!

Scan custom build here, I call it squishy, it's my squishy, and I hug and squish it a lot.

OK, you've convinced me (once I get the refund from Evesham). All I have to do is get the £3300+ price tage down - I may have been a little 'exuberant' with the spec. :)
