Do I need one of these (http://www.newit.co.uk/shop/products.php?cat=5) for running my music server,I don't think I'd use it for anything else but who knows. It looks about the size of a power adaptor with a power consumption of 19 watts
Looks like the power consumption I quoted is high its possibly as low as 5-7 watts running ethernet and a usb drive

I still can't answer your question, but interesting what a change in the OS can make, Steve. :)
It would be a very cheap way to host my forum, just load SMF on to the sd card and away you go.
How about the data, Glenn?
I was thinking about saving to the SD card or a USB HDU
I think we might struggle to get the forum on an SD card now. ;)
Mine is less than 2gb last time I looked.
Thats similar to what I'm thinking with my Squeezebox music server using a usb HD or NAS share for the data.

We might get away with SDHC.
Would it need a separate external IP address?
I would have thought so.

You give it an internal IP on your network and then open the router firewall to whatever ports the applications need.
For example port 80 traffic looking for a website will only be able to get past your firewall to the one computer configured to allow that and so that is the only one visible to visitors.
It certainly looks good for small server applications, will run Ubuntu Server with no problems.
I may get one of those :thumb:
Well hopefully I've done my home work, and ordered one. I should in theory be able to run Squeezebox server on Debian squeeze with the music attached as a NAS share or usb HD the wiki looks fun and aptly named http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/Sheevaplug_SBS_Server_for_dummies
Someone's gone to a lot of trouble there, Steve.
Let me know how you get on with it Steve.
Will do.
Mine will arrive tomorrow or if your looking at this tomorrow it will arrive today. >:D

Great ! let us know how it goes.
Well its arrived, the SDHC reader from amazon has not, maybe I can find my old one. The site with the "easy images" http://uploadhyper.com is down. So if I decide to play to day I'll have to do it all manually. :eek4:
Just received an email from the MD of Newit.co.uk to ask if the package had arrived, not a bad service I think. :thumb:
Rather IDNet like, Steve. :)
Well it works in fashion I can boot Ubuntu 9.04.Debian Lenny from SDHC but struggling to get Debian Squeeze up and running which is what I want for the squeezebox server but its all good fun we will get there in the end.
This is taking far too much of my time  Linux numpty but Debian Squeeze is up and running, next step is music server
Go on, Steve, you know you're loving it. ;D :out:
Its a steep learning curve at least I've progressed from a serial connection to an SSH connection (PuTTY ,Ubuntu 9.1o via virtualbox running on Mac OS X. The serial connection is a right pain as the chair's not comfortable at least with the SSH I can now lounge where I wish.
And now in English...
The serial lead is not very long so to use the console I have to be next to the plug (which is connected to the router) with the laptop. Now with the SSH or LAN connection I can sit in the lounge etc and be a member of the household again ;D
Right. :thumb:
The success stories board has an array of uses and applications for the sheevaplug.

Squeezebox server up and running on the Sheevaplug  Things got a lot easy for me after I installed webmin (http://www.webmin.com/) on Debian squeeze. CLI is not for me.
Now I start to worry about security.
Oy, always with the worries, Steve. ;)
Anyone who wants to play with a Sheevaplug without buying one can try this virtual one here (http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/SqueezePlug#SqueezePlug_Virtual_Machine) I've not tested it but it runs on Virtualbox (I'm presuming the Windows version) the download is a virtual disk install of Debian Squeeze for the Sheevaplug.
Cheers Steve, downloading now.
Shame you can't emulate the ARM cpu as well to get a truer performance feel. I've not seen any evidence that it will run anything like an SMF forum.
