Title: Sata-150 help please
Post by: stevie0573 on Mar 05, 2007, 13:19:39
Hi all,
Im wondering if anyone can help me on this, i have a Asus A8N-SLI SE motherboard and am thinking of getting a new hard drive (for when i move to vista) but looking around now where seems to stock the Sata-150 drives and if they do the price is so expensive. Im wondering if it is possible to use sataII drives with this motherboard or am i screwed (jeez less than a year on meh!!!!).

cheers and look forward to any advise

p.s i did ask this question on the asus forum (a** holes) :)

I believe that SATA II drives are backwards compatible. You will most likely find that there is a jumper (not of the woolly type :) ) on the back of the drive which will make it 'understand' that it is connected to a SATA-150 controller.

I reckon if you do a quick Google on SATA II backward compatibility it will confirm what I think.

Thanks
Lance

Hi Stevie,
I am currently using a Samsung Sata 300 drive with an Asus A8V deluxe m/Board with no problems, this board only supports sata 150 drives.

Normally Sata 300 drives should automatically adjust to the lower speed which mine did, and if they don't they are usually supplied with a jumper that forces them to run as a Sata 150 drive, Samsung certainly are.

Cheers guys for that, it makes sence now why they are probably not selling many sata 150s if u can use sataII in their place.

What are the samsung hd's like ive seen the spinpoints have good reviews (god that means i will have to move away from seagate) :)

They are nice quiet drives stevie there's no doubt about that. I've installed 2 or 3 in machines over the last couple of months BUT why move away from Seagate, the latest 7200.10 Series are superb drives and a 5 Year Warranty to go with them

Hi Stevie, I believe the A8N-SLI SE is a SATA II controller anyway. I'm running an A8N-SLI Premium and I believe the only difference between the two boards is the fact that the premium has an extra controller to allow 8 drives instead of just 4.

As far as I'm aware the SE has the Nvidia controller which is SATA II so you should be able to run either type of drive no problem. I'm running a mix of the two types at the moment.

cheers
