Title: Firefox 3.6 pushed back to first quater 2010 nd FF 4.0 maybe 2011
Post by: Gary on Dec 29, 2009, 02:06:07
Looks like Mozilla is slipping again, FF 3.6 which was meant to be out before the end of the year is now slated for the first quarter of 2010, makes you wonder, with big money being pumped into in my view the privacy hell that is Google Chrome, next year could see FF slip further and further behind, now if Safari allowed decent adblockers that were not input managers, or used Simbl and I could use it with my bank I may just move away from FF if this continues, I wont touch Google though, I wont even have google earth on my Mac with its damned updater, Google want your information and thats that  :shake: could be a interesting year for FF, we may see Chrome being the new default install as an alternative if they keep slipping like this.

FF 3.5 is stable and working well, so I prefer them to hold back the final release of 3.6 until it's running properly.

If you can't wait to try the new version join those of us doing beta testing (http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-beta.html)

Thats not quite the point I was trying to make, they are slipping on code more and more, its not just my opinion, many review sites have noticed this, when you say 3.6 will be out before the end of the year and it slips back this far, and the other players like Google have been pushing out new versions, it makes you wonder if Mozilla can keep up, once Google Chrome reaches 4 as a stable full release you will have add ons for it, and of course adblock, by then people will turn to that not FF as they get fed up of dates slipping and new features not being realised as promised. After all its not the first time Mozilla has done this. Don't get me wrong I use FF as my main browser, but they are starting to loose footing just a bit. Surely its best not to promise a release than to publicly have to slide back, if version 3.7 slips and that is meant to be more compatible with Windows 7, then people will just look somewhere else, and with 4 looking like 2011 instead of 2010 now thats not great PR

I don't know whether I'm a typical user, Gary, but I'm not in the least bothered if the date slips, providing the act quickly on any security issues in the interim. I'm not a great one for change for change sake these days, if it does what I want, I'm happy.

I can see that and agree, but the browser market is hotting up again, and many people are hungry for new features, and shaving a few seconds of rendering etc, also if other browsers implement better security more quickly then that does become an issue. Its less what the likes of you or I want but more about market politics.

I am a keen fan of Firefox, but I am in no doubt at all that one day I will move to another browser.

As yet FF has an edge for me and I prefer dates to slip rather than have poor software issued.

Ubuntu has release dates set in stone and users have been bitten more than once because of that.

I agree, but its best not to shout here it comes guys then say Oops sorry first quarter of 2010, it makes Mozilla look bad in a competitive industry, also finance may be an issue, Google can pour untold amounts into Chrome and it does seem very stable by what people say, and look how far that's gone in a short space of time, I am a keen FF user as well, I just think they should be careful not to be seen to be slipping, best to be more ambiguous with your delivery times then get flamed by the media and have doubts cast over the net as to your capabilities, which has happened a bit here.

As you say though 3.5 is stable enough and thats what matters.

Can't say I am pulling my hair out at the delay, FF 3.5.6 is stable, quick and relatively secure. I would prefer it if other software manufacturers would follow Mozilla's lead and release software when it works properly rather than to an artificial deadline.

I agree. Right is much more important than on some arbitrary date.
