Anyone got one of these? have just reserved on in my local Argos not a bad price either...if you have one if you could comment on this before tomorrow I would be eternally grateful.....well at least until Tuesday ;D
:thanks3:
Which model, David?
Product no WNR2000.
http://www.argos.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10001&catalogId=1500001801&langId=-1&productId=1500513583 This one This is the one I have reserved..
That appears to be a cable router, if you check the reviews, David.
David, you do know that this is just a router, you would still need a DSL modem to connect it to the internet?
System Requirements
* Broadband (cable, DSL) Internet service and modem with Ethernet connection
* 2.4 GHz 802.11n specification adapter or 2.4 GHz 802.11b/g wireless adapter. Alternatively, an Ethernet adapter and cable for each computer.
* Microsoft® Windows® Vista™, XP, 2000, Mac® OS, UNIX®, or Linux®
* Internet Explorer® 5.0 or Netscape® 4.7 or higher
* We recommend using this product with RangeMax Wireless-N Adapters (WN511B, WN311B, WN111, WN711, WNDA3100)
My connection is so slow today cant get across the pond, Rik's right it needs a modem as well such as the Draytek Vigor 120 if you want to spend the money
Have you talked to support, Steve?

I got this reply on Tuesday
We have received the results. BT have advised the issue relates to
contention within your local exchange. Currently there is a lack of
capacity within the exchange to enable them to make further bandwidth
available, they have advised this is unlikely to be resolved until
around mid-january however the connection should continue to work within
their acceptable product specification. We have raised a fault with BT
in order to determine if they can move your connection to a less heavily
contended part of the exchange if there is sufficient capacity to do so.
If they are able to do this, then it should complete within 3 - 5
working days. As soon as we have an update back from BT we will be in
touch to advise further.
This morning I was getting a full throughput of 6.8mbps its been desperate since midday ,its around 0.5-1mbps. I've not bothered to contact them since as I am not sure what else they can do. Its very frustrating as even last night it was fine as well.
It does seem that they have done everything they can, Steve, and are totally at the mercy of BT. :(

I think the one in Argos is a DGN2000 which someone here is using and is happy, but unless your are planning on any wireless N acquisitions i.e new laptop etc its probably not worth it,although you may get a better range of g wireless performance than the DG834g.

Yep. I have the DGN2000. I don't use the wireless N part yet but the router is great and has a broadcom chipset.
I get full wireless signal throughout the house.
Esp like the 4 SSID that can have different options set, Its good for people that have a DS that only supports WEP. Set up a WEP wireless options and only enable it when you want it without touching the WPA one ;D
Router just arrived... :red: just realised it is not wireless ...I really should try and stay awake
So which one did you order, David?
In my haste I ordered the one on the link page which is the DG 834 v4 I have not opened it so there should be no problems returning the item

Sorry, mea culpa, I was busy trying to locate a v4, and didn't stop to check whether it was wireless.
NP I should have checked it..I am just looking what they do have...as this is not opened I cant envisage a problem with returning it and it would be easier if I got my wireless router from them but if I cant a walk over to the shops later will sort it out...I might end up with the one Lona likes so much ;D
There don't seem to be many wireless v4s out there, David, and you want to avoid the v5.

ADSL Link

Line Attenuation 49.0 db
Noise Margin 6.1 db

I must admit to liking the flashing blue light but decided on this one ;D
I have that router, its expensive as its a dual band 5ghz and 2.4 ghz simultaneous router, it works great with 5ghz compatible equipment, like my iMac but unless you have any stick to 2.4ghz David, its not worth it unless you want to stream HD material.

What do you think of this one ?
That is the one I have just purchased and it seems OK at the moment, apart from the fact that although it is wireless 'N', it refuses to work at the wirless 'N' speeds with my wife's Acer laptop that has wireless 'N' built in. So it probably is just a compatibility issue, but the cost of the recommended matching wireless dongle for it, is half of the price of the router again, which I am not prepared to pay.
Colin
N is still suffering from this kind of teething trouble, Colin.

Mine works at 300Mbps on the iMac, on acer laptops you need a card with three aerials not two to get the higher speeds, the intel 5100 and below wont get above 130. You can get it to run faster than 54-65 though if you set channel width to 40MHz (or automatic if this is not an option) on the laptop

I think the Acer 5735Z laptop is a load of rubbish and I wish we never bought it. We originally bought it from Currys a few months ago (as my wife gets a discount as a previous employee) and it was advertised in the press and on their website that it had a built in web cam and even the large sticky label plastered all over on it states Video Conferencing, but how that does that without a web cam is beyond me. Also on the same label it states the specs and the wireless spec is stated as an Acer Nplify 802.11b/g/Draft-N, when in fact it has an Atheros AR5B91 adaptor, which when I looked up the specs on Google is a Dual Band 2.4/5Ghz wireless N adaptor. I have installed the very latest driver and there is nothing that I can find on the laptop to set the the channel width at all. I have tried all wireless N settings on the Netgear DGND3300v2 and still the Acer will still only connect at 54mbps.
Colin
I would take the Acer back stating it's not fit for purpose and they will have to replace or refund.
A friend of mine bought an Acer PC from Comet and had a nightmare trying to replace it, even thought the monitor never ever worked.
Part Acer, part Comet I suspect. :(
The router I ordered I think on Friday has just been delivered, got the RMA number so the other one goes back later also returning the router which belongs to A&A as its changeover tomorrow with luck.
I am glad I have got this new any issues there might be at least I can use support at Netgear, hopefully there will be none,I will have my wireless connection so can set up a LAN...
Once switched I think I am right in thinking that with this I will just need the info IDNet sent me,login details and password ?
You will, David. Enter them in the router and you should be good to go.
:fingers: If I am not here tomorrow take it as an early Christmas box ;D
Or a late Xmas delivery. :)

once downloaded, connect the router if its not already connected.
Open your browser and go to 192.168.0.1 and login.

click on router upgrade in the left hand menu and then click the browse button and locate the firmware you just downloaded.

Well if its the first time they've had an internet connection then yes, thats a silly message.
But i'm sure most people will do what i did. Connect the router first then update it ;D
Agreed. Just Netgear being a bit dumb I'm afraid. :)
Well atleast they listened about one thing.. When the router first came out they didnt give the plastic feet with it, people complained it got to hot led down.
When i got mine i was expecting to use my white plastic feet on it but they put a pair of black ones in the box ;D plus the router doesn't get as hot as the reviews say (unless they did more changes to the latest ones)
Progress! ;)
I dont know why I had no notifications of this thread :dunno: I just decided to take a look..Thanks Paul,Thanks Rik I will do this
Glad for once I was not alone with the message ;D
Now let me get this straight ;D atm I am logged on with my old router...so do I connect the new one up and go to the page and download ?can only have one router at a time after all (plugged in I mean)
I cannot log into my IDNet account until tomorrow with luck so would it be better to wait until the changeover ?
If you're going to update the router, David, download the latest firmware with your present connection. The easy way is then to connect via a cable without connecting to the phone line, and from the router, select the file you've downloaded. Then, I'd wait until tomorrow morning to connect the router to the phone line, and try it with your IDNet login, most migrations happen in the small hours. If it won't accept the login, use your A&A until you get the completion email from IDNet.
:thumb: Gotcha....I wondered if I could do this but didn't dare :eek4:

What are you using, David?
Chrome..but I have just switched to FF see if it sorts it :fingers:
Let us know...
That did it,I have a lot of problems with Chrome especially with music downloads from Amazon....they always fail but have got into the habit of changing over to FF now...might change back to FF
I forgot how fast this is
I need to be persuaded to move from FF, and nothing has done that for me yet. I didn't like Opera or Safari, and I don't trust Chrome.
Its wobbly to say the least,I only notice the difference after a long period off here..time for a change I think
Only thing i find chrome good for is sites that use alot of javascript, sites like facebook.
Which I never use Paul..

That's quite normal for me, Lona, but for David it would be a 50% increase. ;)

You sense they enjoyed doing that number, don't you. :)

Joe Cocker has polio? Never knew that. :(
So I was told Simon, not sure if it is true though, as I can't find many references to it.
First I have heard of it :dunno:
I thought that was Ian Dury?
Yes Ian Drury had polio as a child

Thanks David, I don't live in hope though.
Has it arrived Glenn..I will have to star biting my nails soon ?
I don't know, I left for work at 6.30 this morning.
I sent an item Special Delivery on Monday, and it's arrived, so I'm not sure what this chap is doing.
If he sent it Parcelforce, they've probably delivered it back to him, Glenn. They did that to me yesterday, despite the tracking postcode being in Liverpool. It's now being returned to sender, who were actually the addressees... :shake:
I have just got home, there is a Special Delivery parcel waiting for collection at the sorting office. :fingers:
Back soon.
:fingers: :fingers:
I hope they're open, have the parcel back there and it is the routers, Glenn.
  2 routers are in the building, one has never been opened, it's still shrink wrapped.
Plug'n'play! ;D
Need to configure 1st. As I'm away tomorrow, would turning off the router effect the profile, I'm not back for around 10 days?
The profile isn't affected by a router shutdown, you just don't want to blow it with a low connection this evening, as it won't then recover till you've been back five days.
It's only at 2.2mbs at the moment, hopefully with one of my 99p routers it will fix the DMA error that it has failed with the past 2 re-syncs.
:fingers:
I've got an above target NM here, so a re-sync would do no harm, how about you?
It is normally 13db during the day and 12db in the evening
And now?
13db
The uncorrected errors have dropped to an average of 150 - 200/day from 1000's
Good news. That should help the target NM if it stays that way.
OK, back on line with a new router, using v6 firmware, it's connected at 2400kbs, 12db.
Sounds like you may have stuck gold there, Glenn, a morning resync might just squeeze you another profile step, but probably not.
Both routers have never been used, one is sealed in shrink wrap, the other still have everything in sealed packets.
Pretty good value, then. :)
Amazing value, 99p each, one is for a friend though.
If you get any more, remember I'm your friend too. :)
:hehe: I can let you have the ebay username, you could then ask if he has any left.
;D
Phew just got back on line..had to reboot to get here though :dunno:
