Hi all has anyone here got the E71 ? I like what I see whith this phone and any comments would be appreciated ;)
I was looking at that before I got the BlackBerry, David, but I found the keys very small for my sausage fingers.
http://www.mobile-phones-uk.org.uk/nokia-e71.htm
Also, look at the BlackBerry Bold, which has a slightly bigger screen and keyboard.
http://www.mobile-phones-uk.org.uk/blackberry-bold.htm
It is a toss up between these two and apart from the camera it looks good......(I have slim fingers ;D)its still very tricky...my current phone vewty is a pain the battery lasts one day if I am lucky and I have replaced the battery already so I think I may go for the Nokia..on the other hand :dunno:
The battery life isn't great in any smartphone. What exactly are you looking for in a phone? Do you actually want email, web browsing, etc, or just a phone with a half decent camera?
No camera is of no importance Simon...not on the phone anyway I want to browse and email...which on my present phone is really bad ..but at this rate might be slightly faster than my desktop :eyebrow:
Well, the BlackBerry is probably more geared up for email than most other phones, and depending which network you're on, you can usually get a BlackBerry tariff or bolt on, so that you only pay a fixed amount for data (emails / internet) on top of your calls. I have a SIM only tariff with O2, which gives me something like 500 minutes, and 1000 texts, plus unlimited data with the BlackBerry bolt on, for £20 per month, but, of course, I had to buy the phone outright.
Oh, you may also like to know that the Nokia E72 is coming out in a couple of weeks. ;)
Twice. ;)
God it seems this always happens...why cant life be simple ;D
It would be too easy, David.
That would be the E144 then :D
Oh, I see! :red:
Are you on contract, or pay and go, David?
Contract Simon
Who with? I was just wondering what sort of deals you might be able to get, as O2 are certainly 'negotiable'.
I'm with T Mobile at present hadn't thought of changing from them but its open season
I would certainly recommend ringing round. Tell O2 (or whoever, I only say O2, because I'm with them, and customer service is very good) what your current package with T-Mobile is, and what phone you would like. See what sort of deals they can offer, then go back to T-Mobile, assuming you're happy with them, tell them you've found a better deal elsewhere, and what can they do to retain you as a customer. Spending half an hour on the phone could end up with you saving a bit of cash, and getting a nice new mobile as well!
Also, before you commit to a contract with a phone, work out what it will cost over the year, then compare that to the cost of buying a phone outright, and going onto a SIM only contract. :)
God Simon that is complicated...I pay £36 a month for my phone this includes Web and Walk whatever its called,I have god knows how much credit every month and free texts but I doubt if I make 10 calls a month...its just there :D
I'm just trying to work out what your best option would be. How did you originally propose to get the E71
Upgrade option I can change my call plan and take that down to around £21 ish per month
Orange can be very cheap if you ask nicely, David. :)
You can do better than that David http://www.t-mobile.co.uk/shop/mobile-phones/phones/pay-monthly/blackberry/curve-8520/combi/24mth-combi-15-offer/allowances/ and that is for a new contract.

2 year contract, ouch, what ever happened to 12mths :(
Most now seem to be 18 or 24 months sadly Gary
The contract which has jut ran out was 18 months.....the length of the contract isn't really an issue for me

I dont like being in anycontract for over a year if I can help it David, technology changes so fast, and after two years your phone could be half dead, I think the Sim only contracts are a better Idea tbh, and you get a phone elsewhere. The savings can make up for the cost of the phone outlay as well.
True Gary but the mobile phone to me has become another thing that I have just got used to and I am either to lazy to go into the details with myself and just sign or just think of it as a phone, which to my shame I use very seldom and I am no longer in love with the things they do...I don't think I have used my current phone to its maximum potential.....There are worst contracts I have signed in life......
Like the one in The Registrars office ;D
If only I could upgrade this ;)

:D If you use it so rarely get a one month roll over Sim only contract, cheaper bcause you don't get a new phone, if you are happy with yours, and you get more for less cash as they don't provide a handset. You would save money and if you hardly ever use it, why have a 24mth contact with loads of minutes you don't use :dunno:
That is one issue Gary this current phone I hate..touch screen..drives me nuts.go online and its rubbish gets though batteries faster than a digital camera...I really have to get shot of this thing...
I have forgotten what a roll over is ;) >:D

O2 do one that gives for £25 a month that with a phone costs £35 a month, that's a saving of £120 a year if you like your phone, phones operating on 1800mhz like T mobile and Orange use battery faster than O2 or Vodafone that operate on 900mhz. The higher frequency uses more power, signal quality also effects battery, a bad signal will mean it drains faster, so does having 3G set to on if you don't get a 3G signal of if you don't use it, what phone is it you have David?

You need to get the setup details from T-Mobile.
You need to add ';wap2' to the end of the url to get the basic WAP interface, David. So, the url for unread posts would be:
http://www.idnetters.co.uk/forums/index.php?action=unread;wap2
You can then navigate from there.

No Simon...I was on this hours last night...some guy on the Nokia users forum has the same issue but has 6300 numbers in his...I did all my contacts manually in the end (only 12) ;D
I have the manual which shows how to sync up devices and transfer via Blue tooth...got the lap top out and tried and tried...no luck tried getting the phones to link up..no luck....gave up around 1 am
Tried to set up mail....wont recognise any other email other than Tiscali,BT,Hotmail...which is clearly silly.
Cant seem to access internet other than though TMobile Zones....
I want to set the mail with my 1&1 account which seems impossible at this moment...I did find my router on the wireless setting but it would not connect up...After hours of fun I gave up and went off to bed at god knows what time.
I have to get myself over to Argos to pick up one of those toys which is gold dust but I have managed to reserve one of the last ones...I cant get out of this one it was on "Santa's List" so he cant let them down can he....then I have to go to the Christmas assembly, get back here to see some people, that will tie me up until 4 at the earliest.
Then I can try again and set this phone up.
Yes or NO chaps.
Can these things..connect up to the web as stated but not through TMobile zones ?
Can they connect up to designated Email address..not the few on the list ?
If the answer to these are yes...then I will resume my nocturnal efforts later today.
??? ??? ??? ???
Give me human beings any day ;)
You should be able to access POP email from any source, I would have thought, David, but you'll probably need to send via T-Mobile's SMTP server.
On most phones there is a set up wizzard to make things easy David, and bluetooth from one phone to another should also be simple :dunno: no idea why you are having issues.
As has been said, the phone should have it's own email client, and you should be able to set up POP3 fairly simply.
Bluetooth should just be a question of pairing one phone with the other.
You'll need the Nokia software to be installed on the PC to sync with Outlook.
just type in your settings, its simple, David and bluetooth across phones takes seconds, unless the handset is faulty.......maybe read the manual ;D

I had an E71 for a while, blooming good phone. As others have said it can do pop email and alooexchange email as well as the likes of hotmail. I had problems with the provider though (I eas on 3) and ended up switching to t-mobile which meant I got to choose a new phone and although I was very tempted to get another e71 I ended up with a t-mobile pulse instead, good phone but a bit heavy on battery life. Nokia strikes me as the more mature product - good connectivity with the PC via data suite, polished operating system, the pulse is not as slick but has some nice apps and of course, the all important accelerometer :)

I liked the fact you could edit contacts on the PC, sent/receive text messages using the PC and move stuff around (Pictures/Ringtones etc) easily using the PC. Not used an iPhone (I like the tech but not a big fan of the company) but the pulse (Which is an android phone - Google isn't my friend but knows more about me than my friends do!) can't do these things very well if at all - at least, not with any of the apps I have found. I took a few pictures on it recently and needed to get them onto the PC but the only way I could see to do it was by emailing them - Bluetooth doesn't seem to want to connect even though the PC/Phone are paired and trusted, the 'suite' that it is supplied with is just a contact sync and I didn't want to have to remove the memory card to put it into the PC! Problem may well be between chair and keyboard but Nokia make things like that simple.
Android has the potential to be good with things like automatic data synchronisation between the phone and a googlemail address but I miss the ease of use of the e71 - although some of the apps available for android phones (And of course iPhones as well) go a long way to making up for it, Shazam has to be my favourite, I was very impressed when it recognised this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aGDZc9bdUZM which isn't the best known tune in the world :)

I just turned to the dark side and bought a Mac, they are very puritanical I agree, but the kits great :thumb: I found the pc suite sort of took over to much, but i agree with Shazam its fantastic, there is a paid for version now called Shazam encore which lets you do more, best thing ever that app, and so handy for obscure songs, I heard a song on lie to me, it was this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oEcXz7b2Bk0 and the rest of the album is great, very handy that app.

You need to get the setup details from T-Mobile.
Just seen the second comment ,thanks Rik will get them now :fingers: :thumb:

You mean a Simon Special, Ray?
That's it, Rik. ;D

Infamy! :argh:
David, going back to the email settings, all you need is the POP3 details from your domain (1&1 is it?), and your user name and password.
Oh, and have the two Karma I owe you, though I still haven't seen the little phone icon. ;)
:hehe: I am working on it Simon..... >:D
I have entered the correct settings and password..and here comes the rub..it seems it is rejecting it :bawl:
Incoming server (POP3) Outgoing server (SMTP)
1 and 1 Internet pop.1and1.com smtp.1and1.com
What else is there to do ?
Is the user name correct? Have you tried the full email address? It will be the same as if you were setting it up with Outlook.

Hi Simon.I don't use outlook at the moment, well only to receive, its set to 0000 as I use 1and 1...all the settings are correct and the password is correct...lets be honest and comedy free it isnt brain surgery I just followed the wizard it just wont connect to the server :dunno:
The difference with me is I can send Emails from my phone but it wont receive them :dunno:
I wont give up...you know me >:D
Talking of giving up where's the love of my life....I need a bed bath  :hehe:

That seems to be about synching, I take it you entered pop3.xxxxx what ever the servers name is, some are just pop as in pop.o2.co.uk for instance mail.o2.co.uk so double check if there are any setting differences. Also sure this has been mention but your smtp setting may be that of your network provider in which case you would use authentication on the smtp side and there smtp servers possibly
Thanks Gary..yes to most of the points
which case you would use authentication on the smtp side and there smtp servers possibly
Will change this later on :fingers:

David, 1 and 1 mail servers are pop.1and1.co.uk and smtp.1and1.co.uk or auth.smtp.1and1.co.uk if you are using authenticated mail which you will be if you have a separate email service from them.
Thanks Ray I will try again and if that fails....give up ;D

I wonder if its 1and 1 then :dunno:
No, I have in the past used my phone to get mail from there (I use the netbook and dongle now).
I have no problem using the phone as a connection not with anything
So it has to be a setting in the phone, surely?
My thoughts entirely...some settings cannot be changed once in though... :eyebrow:
The only setting I have not touched is start TLS
SSL/TLS whatever this is :dunno:

This is what I got Ray..I turned the security off...and it worked..I dont know if I can reply as I just received a message from Ebay and got onto the site..when I tried to send an email to myself I got an error message but I think I can sort this out.I also changed the 1and 1.com.to .co.uk which did the trick
Managed to sort out my sending problem, had to delve into the smtp settings on the phone and had to set the port no to 25, it was set as 0.

Its just faster browsing using wifi than using GPRS David, also some times providers block things, not your email, but sites and services like skype.

smtp.idnet.com, Rik, I set it up by entering the details on Virginmobile site which they send to you as a configuration text message that you can install that's supposed to set up everything on the phone for you. For some reason it was setting the smtp port to 0, I altered it to 25 and I can now send as well as receive emails on the phone. :thumb:
:thumb: :thumb:
Solved mine as well but I am confused how its happened.I put in davixxxxxx at idnet .co ??? and it was a breeze.took under 2mins :dunno:
