Title: Firefox's default search engine
Post by: kinmel on Dec 11, 2009, 12:16:44
[TFH]

Since Mozilla has commercial sponsorship from Google, the default search engine for Firefox is Google.

Google's C.E.O. has this week reminded (http://weblogs.mozillazine.org/asa/archives/2009/12/if_you_have_nothing.html) everyone that their privacy policy is much less user friendly than Bing's.

As you would expect a Firefox Bing Add-on (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/10434) has appeared that allows you to change the default search to be Bing.

p.s.  Many people will still prefer using Google, afterall it is a better search engine  ;D

An understatement if ever there was one!

I can't imagine ever switching from Google, despite what we know about them.

Me neither, but I stop at the search engine. ;)

There was a time I couldn't imagine ever switching from Altavista but I did! I'm trying Bing and prefer if when searching for video as it has a built in preview - might also be available in Google but never seen it and it's standard in Bing. To be honest, I pretty much find what I am looking for in Bing and only occasionally revert to Google.

Prefer the directions on Google maps to Bing's effort though.

Yeah, but that was a long time ago, before there was any major difference between search engines. Google is superior and probably always will be.

I could never use Bing. It just looks like a disaster on a page!

I block all things google, with a privacy add on for ADBlock Plus which is very useful http://easylist.adblockplus.org/ and use the easy privacy with the adblock list, and set a permanent no ad serving cookie plug in in firefox

The thing is, and I loathe to say it, google just keep refining there search and its always spot on, I have bing but I do not find nearly so many good results, and I like the uncluttered goggle interface (with ad block) Bing just seems to not be so well tuned, especially at image searches. Microsoft are I doubt ever going to catch up to google in the search arena, and google with never give us our privacy, you take your pick, and your your chances.

Take a look at

scroogle (http://www.scroogle.org/)

It uses goggle but removes the crud.
