Title: Another reason to use OpenDNS
Post by: kinmel on Dec 10, 2009, 22:42:34
OpenDNS (http://www.opendns.com/) has now teamed up with Neustar to ensure that OpenDNS servers are updated in real time.

This means people using OpenDNS as their nameserver will always get the most up to date routing for any website.

See El Reg (http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/12/10/real_time_dns_directory/) for the technical information

Do they still use google? I have not used Open DNS in ages nver was sure about open DNS, it seems a great idea, but is it faster than IDnets dns servers

Edit * ok they are google less now* who uses Open DNS here and what are your views against IDnets?

I use OpenDNS for the following reasons

1.  Their name servers are updated more often and are far more robust.

2 If you sign up you get content controls, site blocking, malware protection, network re-binding protection and many more security features.

3. Create shortcuts so when I type ID I am taken to my Idnet webspace, mail takes me to my personal webmail server

Have a look at the Dashboard

 :iagree:

The only side effect I see of using opendns is that you sharing your data with yet another party. However as long as opendns operate in a fair fashion i think the pro's  of opendns far outway the con's.  :thumbd: to giving google any more of my data.

I've been using OpenDNS for a few years now and I'd never use anything else. It just seems to be so much more reliable and a lot more powerful (in terms of features), too.

OpenDNS will also add a level of security. Last year I was deliberately trying to infect a system with malware found in the wild (for testing purposes), and failing miserably to pick any infection up, until I realised that OpenDNS was protecting me :)

I had a play with it yesterday, my pings went up and it seemed more sluggish to me, swings and roundabouts I guess, what you lose in one hand you gain in the other.

I'm sure you're right, Gary. I just found it better in the long term.

Haven't tried it out yet and don't intend to
