Title: Another question from a potential customer

Whilst I'm waiting for my MAC code from O2, I thought I would ask another question.

My exchange has no LLU.  I have been on O2 Home Access for about 9 months and my speeds have never been amazing but I am aware that my maximum will never be above 1.5Mb - 2Mb. 

About 3-4 months ago the speeds started to get really bad at peak-times and I began suffering from disconnects whilst playing World of Warcraft (I stayed connected to the internet but was disconnected from the game server). 

I contacted the games technical support guys with information about my computer, connection and a traceroute to the game server.  They said it was a problem with the ISP so I contacted O2 and got the usual scripted answers about work being done to Home Access, they will pass my information onto the traffic management department, it will be fixed soon etc etc... basically the same thing I've been hearing for the past few months.

So my question here would be, is this something that I can expect to improve with IDNET?  Or could all of my troubles actually be lying with BT/my exchange? 

I've heard great things about IDNET and the forums seem to be a very helpful place (unlike the O2 forums which seem to have no direct input from O2 themselves).  I would very much like to have them as my ISP but as I said, I am a little worried that my problems could be lying somewhere other than the provider and I will just be carrying my connection issues over to another company.

After such a bad experience with O2 Home Access, I really want to make my next move a good one and worthwhile.

House, IDNet do not throttle your connection, nor block any ports. As long as you connection is stable, you should see little or no lose of throughput at peak times.

I guess you mean the game server, Rik?  I think it would be "host-21.wow-europe.com [80.239.179.21]"

And the name actually comes from an old Xbox Live ID I had but you can just call me Doc if you like ;)

I don't really understand much of that but I'm guessing you would have said something if anything appeared to be wrong.

So, I'll see you once/if O2 give me my MAC   :fingers:

Well, you can try those same pings for yourself and see what kind of figures you get. You should be a bit slower than me to IDNet as we are on a direct connection, so to speak, but if you make the comparison, it will give you an idea of what you could expect.

Good news.

O2 have agreed to let me terminate my contract early and I should have my MAC within 24 hours  :)

I can't believe how fast O2 sent out my MAC, I had it within the hour.

So I've signed up for IDNET but I haven't received any kind of confirmation email and they didn't ask for any payment details yet  :dunno:

Well I was connected to IDNET today but it didn't come without problems (nothing to do with IDNET).

The brand new Netgear DG834v4 I purchased wouldn't communicate with my PC so I couldn't change the settings via the browser.  Also the power light didn't work, although the port number light was working.  After a call to Netgear support, they confirmed the router was faulty.

Luckily, I dug out some Belkin I had from a year or 2 ago and it seems to be working fine.  I think I'll take my refund from Dabs.com on the Netgear and continue to use the Belkin unless it gives me problems  ;)

A quick speedtest showed me at 1.75 Mb, which for my area/line is the very best I can get so I am happy so far  :thumb:

Consider getting a 2wire 2700 HGV, from Ebay. They're dirt cheap but excellent routers, especially good for long\poor lines. Search for "BT Business Hub"

Plenty of information on the dedicated board and on other sites.
