Title: Joined IDNET yesterday, speeds fluctuating
Post by: GizmoTheMogwai on Nov 28, 2009, 19:08:43
I joined IDNET from Virgin and it was up and running tommorow, got a constant 6mb (my lines maximum) all day, was really good and stable.

Today I have been getting an average of 2.5mb, with higher pings as well.

Do IDNET line test for the first week, could that be the reason of the lower speeds?

Thanks,
Daniel.

Hi Daniel and welcome to the forum. :welc: :karma:

Are you on WBC or Max? Did you migrate from Virgin, or was this a new connection? Can you post your line stats - if you're not sure how to get at them, what router are you using?

:welc:

It could well be line testing but my money would be on BT rather than IDNet

We are on the up to 8mbs home max package. We were with virgin, but have now switched to IDNET. I am pretty sure we are getting a new connection, as for the first time yesterday I was able to download torrents at the lines maximum speed.

The speeds were consistently fast yesterday, even at the peak times, we have been getting 2.5mbs today starting from 1pm, which is not a peak time  :-\

D-Link DLR-2640R is the router.

In a browser window:

1. Go to http://192.168.1.1 in your browser
2. Log into the router (default, Username: admin  password: admin)
3. From the Top Navigation, click the Status Button
4. From the Left Hand Menu, Select "Statistics".
5. Your line stats are displayed under the "ADSL Statistics" Section.

If you can post back your downstream sync speed, noise margin and attenuation, we'll have a better idea of what's going on.

How are you measuring throughput, eg local metering or speedtest site. If the latter, which one.

I usually find that reliable. I think your profile is wrong. For that sync speed, you should have 6.5M, and for that attenuation, you should have a full 8128 sync. The fact that your noise margin is at 10.5db suggests that your line has been flapping, resyncing frequently. Have you noticed this?

Can you do a BT speed test, http://test.speedtester.bt.com:50301/, you may need to be patient to get a result. That, and sadly, only that, will tell us what the profile is. If it's low, it would tend to indicate line instability, as your throughput is too high for the other common problem on migrations, a stuck 2M profile.

What else is connected to the phone line, how long is the lead from the router, do you have a new style NTE5 faceplate, the type where you can remove the bottom part of the faceplate?

Sorry for so many questions.

for a 7616 with those line stats i would say interleaving has been turned on

just a thought

It has, Colin, and the NM has been increased, but it doesn't explain the throughput, so we need to see what the profile is.

Download speedachieved during the test was - 5833 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 600-7150 Kbps.
Additional Information:
Your DSL Connection Rate :7616 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 6500 Kbps

Cable to the router from the phone is about 4 meters.

The heck?

I was getting 2.5mpbs 10 minutes ago and now i'm getting 6.5mpbs in a speedtest.net test.

This is the flapping you were referring to?

which server on speedtest.net are you using.

The bt tester only lets you test once every 3 hours :-\

I'm getting 650kbps downspeed in torrents at the moment though, i'm just concerned about the torrent speeds earlier, as it was pretty slow all earlier today, but now, in the peak-time, the speeds have really sped up! Shouldn't it be the other way round?  :dunno:

Try BBMax speed test here. (http://www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk/)

Welcome GTM.

IDNet don't throttle connections, so if you're seeing slowdowns when its busy (weekends and evenings) it may be exchange congestion. Having said that, it might be a good idea to leave it all alone for a few days, to see if it settles down.

might just of been the tracker on a wobler or the seeds were just in a general slow mood

Well, if everyone was with IDnet it would be faster ;)

which server on speedtest.net are you using.

I was using the same server(Milton Keynes) on Speedtest for all the tests, so I don't think it is a issue of it being inaccurate.

At the moment, test speeds within the last 5 minutes seem to go from 5.2mpbs to 6.5mbps, so it doesn't seem to be entirely stable.

Any ideas?

Switch to the Maidenhead server, do some more BT tests at 3 hour intervals. ATM, I'm suspecting a congested VP or VLAN, I was seeing speed swings from 580k-3.8M myself recently until BT rebuilt the circuit. Once you have 3 or 4 BT tests, pass the data to IDNet and let them check the line.

I've split off Cleopatra's thread on upgrading to Max, to avoid confusion. :)
