Title: ADSL2+ 24mb speed help
Post by: c1hundred on Nov 26, 2009, 19:45:08
Hi

I upgraded to ADSL2+ 24mb and I didnt see any speed increase.
IDnet say Im too far from the exchange.

I get 2448kbps down and 742kbps up

My router results gives -

DSL VPI/VCI:         0/38
DSL Status:          Showtime
DSL Mode:            ADSL2+
DSL Channel:         64
DSL Upstream Rate:   961700
DSL Downstream Rate: 3419700

                      Down         up
DSL Noise Margin:     6.0 dB      12.40 dB
DSL Attenuation:     28.0 dB      56.0 dB
DSL Transmit Power:  16.4 dBm     12.4 dBm

Anybody able to confirm this is right?

Hi. Im no expert either but how far are you from the exchange.

i know there is a site that can give the distance from exchange to your house,as the crow flies, but cant recall it now

anyone know it?

http://www2.farina1.com/adsl/ will give you an approximate speed of the line, but I think it is only ADSL > ADSL2+ so if you know what your stats were before you moved, input them.

28dB isn't actually a very high attenuation, and you should get about 16Mb sync. I can't actually tell what you're sync'd - the sync figures seem a bit confusing. As such, it's difficult to say whether this is just a throughput issue or whether it is sync. What router is it?

In the meantime, could you run a BT speed test (http://www.speedtester.bt.com) and post the results? Also, do you have a BT master socket with a removable lower half?

Thanks for the speedy help guys  :)

Here is the BT results

Download speedachieved during the test was - 2664 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speedsis 600-7150 Kbps.
Additional Information:
Your DSL Connection Rate :3419 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 961 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 2500 Kbps
The throughput of Best Efforts (BE) classes achieved during the test is - 18.73:23.57:57.7 (SBE:NBE:PBE)

My router is a Linksys WAG54G2
I also have one of these new BT speed increase faceplates (new build house)

I can't really help with the tech stuff, but how long ago did you upgrade?

There is something odd with that speedtest. The throughput is showing higher than the profile!

As Sebby said, with that attenuation the norm would be a higher sync but if you haven't noticed any difference then it does seem that you line is one of the few to break the norm and what support have said is true (support and normally very honest anyway).

The regrade happened about 3 or 4 months ago.
IDNet seemed to be a bit stumped and I had lots of BT issues at the exchange at the same time that took a week for BT to get there finger out.

I had hoped that it would sort itself out and that I would see a little bit of speed increase.
Oh well  :(

On the bright side, at least you've got some extra bandwidth!

Those test results are very odd, his upstream noise margin is 56db with a down of 28db! His up should be lower than his down, mine is 32db and my up is 18.5db. His 28 and 56 up don't make sense, also his SNR are odd I have an snr of about 13db on my line with an 8128 profile with no interleaving, so something looks wrong with those stats, either that or its to early and I need to put my glasses on. I know he is on adsl2 + I'm not sure if it increases your downstream att like LLU does, but I would think a downstream att of 56db would make more sense with upstream being 28db.   :dunno:

I agree, Gary, to me the attenuation figures look reversed, ditto the noise margins. Given the speedtest result returning higher throughput than the profile (which is correct for the sync speed) coupled with the 12db noise margin, I sense a flapping line.

c1 - welcome to the forum, :welc: :karma:

Can you borrow an alternative router, what else do you have connected to the line, are you using any extension leads?

I have tried with another router
I have tried directly into the NTe (with and without the faceplate)

Unfortunately I get very similar results from BT speedcheck and the BroadbandMax.co.uk speedcheck.

Should I be going back to IDnet with these results ?

What else is connected to the line?

I checked by removing the NTe faceplate (thus removing all internal wiring) so only the router and my laptop are connected.
Same results !

OK, but the line has been flapping, so what else is normally connected?

Normally there is a PC used for just general browsing and email (wired)
a streaming audio server (wired)
and my laptop over wireless

The results were taken with both the wired PCs disconnected

No phones, Sky boxes etc? How long is the cable from router to socket?
Title: Re: ADSL2+ 24mb speed help
Post by: c1hundred on Nov 27, 2009, 19:03:53
Nope nothing else.

The router to phone cable is about a metre and I changed it when I tried with the other router.

In that case you seem to have done all you can. If possible, leave the router connected to the test socket and get three BT speed tests, morning, afternoon and evening, then let iDNet have all your results as ask them to investigate.
