Title: printers..........again
Post by: Baz on Nov 17, 2009, 19:44:44
well, you may remember that I got a new all in one a while back.HP Photosmart C8180 from my daughter as she didnt need it for a while, I needed a new one  so we came to an arrangement  :)

Little did I know that she wanted it back  :(  so now I am looking for a new one again and am open to suggestions.
Needs to be wireless and I want another all in one.Not fussed about fax as dont use it.Like the printing from card facility and the touch screen ans ease of use of this one.Not keen on the what seems like excessive 'maintenace' or 'printing preparation' it seems to do in between jobs...... and its a tad noisy but I can live with that. Was really impressed with this HP model after having Epson for years and didnt think I would find a better make but I did with this

so if any one has an HP model would be grateful for your views of it please.

may consider other brands too.

Thanks

IMO you still can't go far wrong with Canon. I've had HP (poor build quality - they may have improved), Epson (heavy on ink with a tendency to dry up) and Brother (Melted the internal cables after a leak).

My Canon, OTOH, Just works - every time I need it, and works well.

Another vote for Canon printers, I have Pixma MP610, the 620 is wireless (http://www.argos.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10001&catalogId=1500001801&productId=1500513651&langId=-1&engine=froogle&keyword=Canon+MP620+Wireless+Printer%2C+Scanner+and+Copier&_$ja=tsid:11527%7Ccc:%7Cprd:6704410%7Ccat:All-in-one+%28printer%2C+Scanner%2C+Copier%29)

I'm looking for a new printer as well. The current printer I use is a HP C5180 which is rock solid and still absolutely perfect. However, I'm moving house and it isn't!

I've never in all the HPs I've used (which is quite a lot due to family, friends and work) experienced poor build quality and I've received an email from them today with a link which is supposed to give £70 of the price of this (http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/uk/en/ho/WF05a/18972-18972-238444-410635-410635-3984414.html?jumpid=em_r2515_uk/en/hho/ipg/photosmart-em-ene-pu-extranews_all/chev-hpstore/20091117) model. However, it doesn't seem to be working!

They do, however, have a page here (http://h41112.www4.hp.com/price_cat_rss/index.php?cc=uk&ll=en&segment=hho&showcat=Photosmart) with a discounted wireless model although I've not compared the prices to elsewhere yet.

Failing those, I would get the Canon MP620 off their ebay site :)

My 610 came from their eBay outlet, it looked brand new, not a mark on it

I know Den has been happy with his purchases from there as well :)

The Canon site is a great place to buy and it's always my first port of call when I require something new (three cameras, printer, scanner) and you just can not beat them.   ;D

I vote for Canon too, I've got the wireless Pixma 620, works fine for documents, not tried photos. maybe a bit slow in printing the first page but this is not an issue for me.

Are Canon cartridges generally cheaper than HP, or are they both about the same?

HP or Canon from me. I've never had an issue with build quality on HP, and they do innovate. Take a look at the Photosmart Premium, Baz, wired or wireless networking, Pictbridge, Bluetooth and card reader, all touch screen controlled.

No, this (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B002ISG9CA/uk-printer-21/?gclid=CMDO75OplJ4CFQdl4wodzVheqg) one, Gary, but the Amazon price seems high, I only paid £140.

Great looking printer, I like the features, i must admit the engadget one interests me as it has a capacitve screen, that Amazon price is very expensive though, saying that until my Canon gives up teh ghost I dont really need any of those features, its still a fantastic photo printer, also I do not print enough to warrant that kind of expense....well that's what I'm telling myself, after the iMac Justina may get the nutcrackers out before Christmas if I did.  :o

Thats the one I linked to above on the HP site, priced at £199 but the email I got said it should be £70 off making it only £129. I might phone HP later and ask how to get the cheaper price :)

By telling them you're reviewing it for a website? ;)

Two things about the printer. One, it has some bugs in the firmware, two the SD card reader supports SDHC, but seems picky about some cards.

I seem to remember some HP printers were like that, I always had less issue with Canon, somethimes yiu have to ask, do I need all these features, after all I print from the Mac I don't need to stick a card in a printer or bluetooth imahed from my phone tbh, sometimes less is more I think.

whats duplex in these printers
Title: Re: printers..........again
Post by: Lance on Nov 18, 2009, 19:55:13
Means it automatically prints on both sides of the paper. Quick on lasers but I think slow on inkjets due to the ink drying time before it feeds it through again :)

My cannon using a fastdraft setting is fast on duplex, as for just plain documents the drying time is quite fast, I wouldn't use it though for colour work

the thing that annoys me about the printer I have now,HP Photosmart C8180, is the times it does 'printing preparation.......' or whatever its called. My wife has just printed 1 page, it spat it out no problem, she sent another to print put the printer decided to go into this maintenance mode or preparation thing, whirred and clunked for about 30 seconds then stopped but didnt print the next job.this is a regular thing that it does too not just a one off.

its really annoying, why does it do this.does it use ink during this.can you turn it off.

I like this printer apart from this and was thinking of sticking with HP for my next one as I have to give this back to my daughter  :(, but Im not sure as to go with HP or not now.

Have a word with HP support, Baz, it may just be that the firmware needs updating.
