Title: email via proxy server failure
Post by: noggin77 on Oct 04, 2009, 18:19:49
Have used a proxy server since Feb 2009 to route our idnet email (cos we've previously been through Tiscali, Pipex etc. and it does get boring giving out a new email address. This way it's simple but I don't want to move again!). Has worked perfectly till yesterday afternoon. Then all email via proxy server stopped. Have checked using email accounts direct to/from idnet, these still work fine. Raised a support request yesterday in case Idnet was not allowing proxy addresses?. Still waiting for a response. I have checked our web domain. Everything there still fine. Help!. Rgds Noggin :(

Support don't work over the weekend, one member is on call for emergency issues - loss of service etc, so I would think that they will get back to you tomorrow.

Hi and welcome to the forum. :welc: :karma:

I've not heard of anyone using a proxy server with the idnet.com addresses before, but there was a spam attack last week which could have resulted in closing off access from this route. Support will respond, but not over the weekend, it wouldn't be considered an emergency situation.

I'm not sure, tbh, what you're trying to avoid - are you using an idnet.com address but not their servers, or are you using a domain and routing it through IDNet?

I'm new to this forum. hope this is received OK and in the right place. I'm using the domain and routing through IDNet, just so if we have to change isp for 5th? time it's really simple. rgds noggin

It is. Bear with me, will you, and set out the steps you are taking with the mail, I'm trying to get my head round what you're actually doing.

If you hve a domain, I'm guessing that you are using email addresses with it and it I this that you are routing through Idnet somehow?

To me, it would make more sense to simply pick up the email addresses using pop3 mailboxes or is that not possible?

Had to go to a meeting. Just back.

I have not got pop3 mailboxes on the domain. When I set this domain up I googled for a solution to handle easy rerouting of emails without having to advise everyone in our email address book of the change - which is what we have done before - should one change isps's yet again - and this way was the solution that made most sense that i found. I checked with idnet that they were happy for me to use a proxy and they said yes so I went ahead. As I say it has been faultless for nearly 8 months. rgds. noggin

Well in that case best wait for support to contact you tomorrow.

I would have thought mysel that the easiest way to do the email would be to have pop3 mailboxes rather than play about with proxy servers!
