Title: Help I'm going to buy a Mac!
Post by: Gary on Sep 29, 2009, 16:07:26
After a disaster weekend with my laptop (Acer EISA partition with very basic xp to use as a shell for another program corrupted) and no way to fix it, as the restore DVD's don't restore that partition, I have had enough of Windows, Management consoles, registry hacks and layered security that gets false positives (this started the issue) and Windows in general.

So iMac, looking at the 24" but heard they will be releasing new ones soon, between now and October as the present iMac is at the end of its life cycle. Has any Mac users here advice, for me will it all work with my router etc as is just help and advice appreciated in any way.  :)

I'm just wondering how long before we need to open a dedicated Mac board, Gary. :)

May be a good idea, Rik. For me Windows 7 is just more of the same, I love my iPhone, I am fed up of registry issues odd partion problems etc also I want something with the same clean GUI and less risk of viral attack, the iMac would be perfect, I have the money for it, but will not buy if they are about to bring out new ones, I'd kick myself. Oh the acer may end up with coffee spilt on it, these things happen

Hi,

I'm no great Mac user but I'm sure there will be one here somewhere.

Have you thought of installing Linux on the Acer. It's not a million miles away from Mac OS as they are both based on Unix. I would certainly be happy helping you get it going and try it out.

Cheers,
Paul.

Apparently Apple will have a few new releases in February. So it might be best to wait then (although it's always better next year with computers ;) ).
Also, wont partition magic fix anything? It always seems to list a tool for any hdd mess up I can think of.

Not sure there is ever a right time to buy there's always something else around the corner, the imac 24 is a great machine but you can't carry it around. I would suggest a trip to an Apple store if you can manage it and spend some time using one or other. Your router should be fine wired/wireless.

I think that's key with any technology purchase, Steve. Whenever you buy, something bigger, better, faster will be released soon afterwards - you have to dive in when you want to or you'll never get there.

The laptop I have now is an 18 3/4 inch screen, its not a carry around thing its a desktop replacement, its huge. I will cannot get to an apple store sadly I cannot go that far due to my disability so its a from home decision.

Its the fact that the partition has a Acer version of XP although very basic on a Vista ultimate machine to run the instanton offline boot for that a media feature, once it's corrupt you cannot recreate it, you would need Acer to do that, well hey would re image the drive at an outet as its their technology sadly. And rcovery disks dont do that. Also I want to move away from Windows to a mac anyway.

NP. Looking at the potential costs I would strongly advise some time spent using one alongside someone who knows what they are doing, otherwise you'll just try to use it as you would a Windows machine initially. It after all may not be what your looking for!

I understand that Steve, my friend Stephen uses one greatly and so I have some insight now, I liked what I saw and used, but will check it all out further, tbh though I think my mind is made up though  :)

I wouldn't buy a iMac at the moment as it is rumoured that upgrades and possibly cheaper prices are likely very soon. Your printer, routers and other USB items should work just fine.

This site gives a good gauge of when updates are due

http://buyersguide.macrumors.com/

I've owned Macs since 1984 and have never owned a PC. When I use PC at work I hate it and would like to throw the computer out of the window than actually use Windows ;D

I would anticipate an announcement in the next few weeks, so the new machines are ready for the Xmas market. It is rumoured the iMac may have a redesign with a new case, keyboard, mouse etc. Apple often pick Tuesdays for announcements so  :fingers: for next week.

That was true a couple of years ago but Linux really isn't like that any more. Ubuntu installs on my laptop out of the box. Everything works. The only real things I have to do are open the hardware drivers wizard and confirm that I want to use the non-open-source nVidia driver and then tell the package manager I want to install the restricted extras (all the patent codecs and stuff.) Of the dozen machines I've installed it on I've only had one that required specialist attention to get it running.

By comparison, installing Vista on the same machine is a nightmare. It ended up with the graphics card, wireless and Ethernet not working and having to download the drivers on another machine and carry them across on a USB key. One of the things I like about Linux is how little I have to mess about with it compared to Vista or XP. I spend 99% of my time with my laptop using it rather than fixing it or cleaning up the latest piece of spyware that's sneaked in past the big-name antivirus that promised to keep it out.

I'd be happy to come over make sure it all goes right for you. It won't cost you a thing other than your time to try it. If you're going to reformat anyway it seems like a good time.

Cheers,
Paul.

Thanks for you offer, I appreciate that, Its Justina's birthday today so I have to get into Chichester so I can buy her a present she wants and look at the macs while I'm there as it hurts so much to get into town. This Acer will need reformatting but some of the keyboard is acer specific touch control for the cinedash, I do wonder if it would be as easy as you say, no harm trying and if it fails it can be dealt with  The iMac is the way I want to go though, both for the OS and also aesthetics, and my iPhone could have babies with it then  ;D

No I just hate having all the grief of a system that offers nothing new takes more looking after, a mac does not at this time need layered protection with the risk of false positives, updating each of these apps daily and scanning etc, and no registry issues to try and fix or which litter and trip over other programs, so at the end of the day its less obsessive and easier to use  ;D

A friend of mine who has a MAC says he saw a kernel panic a couple of years ago, so I guess MACS aren't any more reliable than PCs.  It's all hype really.

He's an expert on Anti virus software and reckons that you really need to have at least two on your PC 'just in case'. Then of course there's the anti-spyware.  Best to have a couple of those as well, as 'Wintroll' over on 'Netters' says that Brand A didn't find the doodle-bug cookie and it caused him all sorts of grief....

Still he says that reinstalling Windows isn't really that big a deal as he usually only has to do it twice a year.

It really makes him laugh that MACs only have a one button mouse and no serial port!!  I mean can you imagine that.  And they say MAC are innovative.  Sheesh, Microsoft have had two button mice for years.

Still, he got the PC from PC World's bargain bin - much cheaper than that over priced MAC rubbish and he feels so much happier being a Gates groupie than belonging to that snobby MAC cult.

There's a bloke with a MAC goes down the pub but whilst my mates can swap stories about the latest video cards and how easy it is to find drivers for the 'hitemandrun' game controller, all he can talk about is how he managed to finish his work early and spent more time with his wife doing other things.  Loser.

Possible the most sarcastic reply ever?
All of that seems wrong. They now have 2 buttons or more on mice. And although they are susceptible to crashes too, there is not much of a virus scare on them. Also, windows is not that bad that you need 6 virus/spyware programs at once. (although a firewall/virus scanner and spyware scanner already add up to 3. I stick with just firewall on always, and the other two on a schedule)

I confess that, like Gary, I've reached that point in life where I don't particularly want to know how things work, and certainly not spend hours making them work. Instead, I want to use the technology, not learn how to maintain it. For that reason, I can envisage a time when I will make the swap to a Mac system.

I've just re-read the article  (http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2009/sep/28/charlie-brooker-microsoft-mac-windows) myself and I think the bits about Windows may even be funnier on rereading than the bits about Mac.

For anyone with a Mac or thinking about purchasing one the Apple Time capsules are failing after a year to 18 months, there are 2 long threads about dead Time Capsules in the Apple Discussion forum. Although luckily they are covered by any Applecare Agreement you may have with your Mac machine linked to the TC (read the small print) after the initial 1 year Time Capsule warranty has expired. This of course is cold comfort as any data loss is not covered. I took the step this weekend of purchasing an external firewire drive for the iMac Time machine backups. I will still use the Time capsule for the Macbook but ensure the sparse image is archived elsewhere on a regular basis

That seems to prod a memory... I think that was discussed in another thread and it was decided that you couldn't do a full system restore that way, but it would be fine for apps, data etc.

And tbh, on the couple of occasions I've had a major crash, I've found that a clean reinstall of the OS (followed by appropriate updates) and a restore of the bits I need is a good way to clear out all the rubbish that tends to accumulate on any hard drive :P

Actually it's a Time Capsule - a combined wireless router (Apple Airport) and backup drive, which integrates with the Apple time machine automated backup system.  The system will allow you to role back to any given version of a saved file.

I imagine they are failing through overheating.  The Airport routers get pretty hot in my experience, so combine that with a hard drive and you have a recipe for failures.

Personally I use a separate firewire drive and SuperDuper which creates a bootable backup.

The TC internal power supply component fails presumably as you say due to lack of airflow and overheating. However the Airport Extreme  has an external power adaptor

There's no denying that the new iMac is great. My only "gripe" is that you can get it in 21.5" and 27", and nothing in between. My early 2009 24" is a perfect size, and really the spec isn't all that different.

The 21.5 is idea size for me 24" was always too big, the new graphics card and better lit screen will be perfect, the 21.5 " has 90% of the pixel content on the 24" and with a 3.03ghz proc will be great, Its faster, Ram is cheaper, so When Justina is back I shall be taking my money to the shop and getting me one with the ATI card in it, I can't wait  ;D

Certainly if your happy with screen size,it seems better value for money when compared with the previous iMac model range. Personnally I think they've made a mistake in not providing a 24" version

I agre they should have 21.5 and 27 is a vast gap in size 27" would give me arc eye from my sitting position where as 21.5 will be perfect, they may reintroduce a 24" if people get up in arms about it, the 27 is just to big for me I may as well get a mac mini and hook it up to my Flat panel TV. I am going to wait for the first the first few weeks to see if there are any hardware glitches, but when Justina and I looked at the old iMacs we knew 20" was the right size but I was unhappy with specs on those, the 21.5 fits well with the faster proc and better card. Also an extra £160 for 8GB ram is better than £800.  ;D Im really excited. The laptop can be sold and I start life with a new OS and machine, which not only works well but looks great.

To be honest I don't think you need more than 4Gb on a Mac for everyday use ,even when running XP in a virtual box with 1Gb allocated for its use my page outs are minimal. I would presume Crucial will have something compatable should one need more than 4. I am assuming the 21.5 in has 4 slots for memory unlike its predecessor.

Sorry Bill! Should have added the words "native support" :)

That's a lot more reasonable  :thumb:

I'd expect OS X to have native support for a device that Apple themselves supply! Nice to have a rough idea of when the next update might be due as well :P

Do any of you mac users have apperture? I was just nosing around some forums when it occurred to me that I haven't seen many people mention it for a while. Has the mac got a newer, better photo editor now, or are people using photoshop for macs now?

I am trying to get to grips with Aperture 2 but I think it's probably intended for the professional taking masses of photos. So far I managed very quickly to sort and stack the input but not got round yet to editing the RAW data.I like the fact you don't work with the master version and any changes are kept as a small data file which is obviously associated with the original version. There are plenty of plug-ins but they're very expensive and I suspect for my needs I would be happy with Photoshop Elements but I will plod on this winter and get through the tutorial book.

I can't help you there. I don't do anything in the way of photo editting (other than a few simple things on iPhoto).

Here's something you may be interested in, Steve.

It's an article about award-winning nature photographer Andy Rouse (http://www.photographyblog.com/articles_andy_rouse_interview_2.php).

He mentions some of the software he uses for RAW processing. You'll also find he's written a book on basic RAW image processing. He also writes an informative newsletter.

I appreciate you were enquiring wrt Mac, but you may still find the information useful.

Hi everyone

just bought Photoshop Elements 6 with a free upgrade to Version 8, I believe version 8 to is better as Adobe have used interfaces from CS3/4, 6 interface is a tad dark for my tastes.

Both are full retail boxed items cost just over £45 with carriage, a bargain I thought.

Have tried Aperture 2 on trial but found it hard to get my head around it, I think it is for professionals doing batch processing on a lot more photo's than I would take.

Photoshop Elements 8 should be here in about a week.

Regards

Thanks Bob,looks like Rawshooter disappeared when Adobe bought the company, which leaves Adobe Lightroom2 not cheap either, certainly Aperture will do the import and initial edit its just a matter of getting one's workflow organised

The photoshop elements v8 looks the next step for specific photo edits without having to spend a fortune.

I'm using Elements 8 on my PC, and it's very good. It's got three settings for editing. Edit full, edit quick and edit guided. I use the guided one more often that not as it's so damn simple, even a small child could use it. When you've basically got your photo right in camera there's not much you need to do so it's perfect.

I highly recommend it.

It is more for workflow management than a replacement for Photoshop, although you can link it to PS for photo editing.  That said there are a number of enhancement tweaks in it so unless you want to do masking and that kind of thing you may find you don't, or rarely, need PS.

Guy Cowan is an expert on Aperture and sometimes does free seminars at Calumet.  His Website (http://www.guycowan.com/)  is down at present but it might be worth a try later on.  Or you could try Calumet's site - they have branches in most major cities.

The greatest transition problem with Switching-to-Mac that I found was in forcing myself to stop thinking like a Windows user. For example, when I went to hook-up a (rather old) printer, I first went hunting for a driver to install beforehand. Frustrated at not finding one I ploughed-on and connected it regardless (expecting to then have to do battle with stand-in generic drivers), went to the Printers section in System Preferences and, lo!, the blooming Mac had not only found and installed the correct driver on its own but also showed me an icon/picture of my exact printer model to prove to me that it had got it right. It was then that I realised that the best way to approach any skill deficiency with a Mac is to think: "well how should it be done, *logically*" and then go for it.

And on top, as if ease-of-use is not enough, you've got Terminal to drop down into from where you have full-blown, full-featured Unix and all those tools to interface and manipulate real servers and routers and switches with. Super :)

I'm down to two at present.  The G5, now 3 years old and still going strong. Can't say it's been 100% as it had a kernel panic when it took exception to a USB card reader.  The MacBook Pro had a battery die after 3 months.  Took it to the AppleStore in Brum and it was replaced immediately with no questions.

The 8 year old G4 is now with sis who uses it daily.  That one never missed a beat, the only work done being a larger drive, some added memory and the transition to OSX.  My niece has an iMac with both that and the G4 networked to an HP multifuntion printer.

So no they're not perfect but if those are the only problems I get over the next 8 years I won't be very bothered.

In both cases Broadband is supplied by you-know-who and, like the Macs, it just works.   :)

Friends in Nottingham Uni's Computer Science department, tell me that a lot of people there have gone over to Macs for much the same reason as Simon.  They get all the benefits of things like Word/Excel, Photoshop etc, and they also have all the Unix command line stuff under the hood for when they want to do serious work.  Like many of the older Unis, they are heavily into Unix so the transition for them is straightforward.

I have the 21.5" its physically bigger than the the old 20 inch and tbh looks huge, the 27 would be good but as a desktop machine but could be a little overwhelming I think, for my needs the 21.5" having 90% of the pixels of a 24 inch is good enough, although with the 27" you get core i5 and i7 procs but one again for my needs the 3.33ghz E8600 does fine. Just to get it straight I am not having a go at a Mac   >:D

I went to Chester and once again drifted into the Apple Mac shop on the Rows to see what the fuss is about.

I sat down in front of a Mac and played around for a while and could not really see what you get for the extra outlay and the hassle of changing all the software. It was nice to see a computer that took up less space but in my way of thinking, if the monitor packs in the computer has to be replaced as well.

Must admit I like to see black on my desktop not white so a choice of colour would be a step forward and what the hell is that keyboard.  :eek4: It's too small (Looks as if it should be on a netbook) and no numeric pad  :eyebrow:. Is it possable to purchase a real keyboard or are you stuck with that.

I will make a point of going again when I have more time as I am sure I must be missing something but I just don't know what.   ;D

New macs are now aluminium (actual metal), not white, and yes you can get a full keyboard, they are on the apple site  ;D

Having been a user for over a decade with windows I was unsure about the move, but needed a change. I am glad i did. Its so nice to have the finder not wade through explorer which now looks like an application made in hell, but its what you get used to, finder is easy to use especially when things are icons, so simple. After 6 days usage I like the simper way I can see what is running by looking in the doc for a dot as well as in activity monitor which once again is laid out cleanly and simply, I like the fact I don't need to defrag, that there is no registry leaving behind a myriad of entries, and you can truly remove a program completely.

Time machine is a fantastic back up utility it automatically backs up my mac without me having to think about doing it, and I didn't have to get it as a separate program either it just runs backups in the background and that's that. I like I have spell checking universally, very handy in instant messengers and as you type in mail ;D There is so much yet to discover but its smooth fast it flows so well, the led display offers outstanding image quality, better than my laptop had and any of my monitors, the colour reproduction is outstanding, what makes me think now is that the laptop was almost as expensive as my Mac in the first place. I like silly things like the screen acting as a flash for the Photo Booth inbuilt iSight camera, clever and boy it works well.

The sound quality is amazing for a small machine, I have it going through a set of Logitech Z2300 speakers with a 8" base drive, pure pleasure to listen to, even without them it sounded great. iPhoto is an amazing photo app it beats what is native in Windows and offers so many features, you really need to use one for a few days to see how even that app works, its chalk and cheese to windows but at the same time not confusing to change over, on a quick play you have no idea what's ahead, and each day I discover something new, and I will for a while. Above all my wife could email and use the machine with ease, Windows confused her, she finds the mac more logical that says a lot as she is technophobic. The capacitive mouse is brilliant gestures on a mouse are a pleasure to use, and nothing to wear out or a wheel to get full of crumbs. I could go on but suffice to say I now would not go back, it took me longer to work out how to get around windows than it has the Mac, everything is pretty much in plain sight. Is that better than windows? Well that's personal choice, and I am not saying my Mac is better then windows, its different, that's the best way to put it.

Oh and should you want you can go buy a keyboard and mouse for the mac quite happily if you don't like what it comes with.

Good reply Gary, it's nice to have a reply that explains and not just criticises the other operating systems. I must admit if I told Linda I was going to change she would have my guts for garters but then she would if I told her I was going to update my PC.  ;D

..... if the monitor packs in the computer has to be replaced as well.

......Must admit I like to see black on my desktop not white so a choice of colour would be a step forward and what the hell is that keyboard.  :eek4: It's too small (Looks as if it should be on a netbook) and no numeric pad  :eyebrow:. Is it possable to purchase a real keyboard or are you stuck with that.

The answer to your first point is this (http://www.apple.com/uk/macmini/). i.e. use your own monitor.

The answer to your second point is something like this (http://www.ebuyer.com/product/110060).

Can't help with the colour.

Criticising has got silly recently Den, we all like what we like, I wish you lived locally as I would say come over and get to use it over a cuppa  :) there is nothing wrong with Windows as far as I a concerned, all I set out to do by changing was to make things "simpler"

As I get older I want plug and play, also on my medication (Morphine and Clonazepam) concentration is hard work, and I chose an iMac so its at a good height yet still all in one, my `osteoporosis and spinal problems make sitting awkward so the added height of the machine helps, also I got the Mac, and Justina got new carpets through out the house, we traded  ;D

Platform wars are silly, Windows and macs both have their place, its about how we use our machines and what we need/want out of them. I figure if we talk and explain our wants we help others to understand our choices. The last thing I would is someone moving platforms in any way to crash and burn with their choice, sadly not everyone sees it like that on forums, and fanboys get out of control on both sides, if you search for mac vs windows its dull reading, this forum is a better place than most, and understanding each other and helping out is what we do well on netters, even if we do get a little hot under the collar sometimes, but a good debate is fun, as long as its not a slanging match and I have been a few of them so I'm just as guilty.

I must admit I would like to have a play with a windows 7 machine to see the improvements over Vista, and windows lets people connect cheaply compared with Macs, that's a big plus point and one that seems to get forgotten, Yes Macs are a bit more expensive, but so was my TV, but I don't expect to replace either in a very long time now.  :thumb:
