Title: Help with Broadband connection problems...
Post by: alhenderson on Sep 14, 2009, 09:23:39
Morning All,

Over the weekend I have had a number of broadband "outages" where I have been unable to connect to any web pages, fetch my mail etc.  TO cure it I have powered down my Netgear DG834 router and started it up again.  Before I powered it down, all lights were green and all seemed to be OK.  It strikes me that there are two possible problems, my router or something outside of my control.  Can anyone shed any light on what steps I might take to confirm where the problem might lie?

I have had other problems with my router lately whereby it just switches itself off and I have to try and convince it to come back up (usually involves moving the plug to a different socket but there's nothing wrong with the sockets (maybe me fiddling around with sockets is giving the router a chance to cool down, or something..).

Thanks,
Al.

Hi Al

Rather than just power down, you need to look at the connection stats in the router, my hunch is that you are losing PPP session, but not sync, but you need to be certain. If it happens again, take a look and, if that is the case, it's going to be a BT issue, so have a word with support.

The other possibility is the router is dying, of course, so if you can try another, that would be useful.

I'll move this over to Help.

Cheers Rik - you confused me there, I was looking in the Broadband discussion forum for the post I just made and it wasn't there!!  Sorry about that..   I will check the router stats next time I have the problem..  When you say support, do you mean IDNet support or do I actually have to talk to BT (please tell me I don't!)?

Al.
