Title: It will go bad soon...
Post by: axisofevil on Aug 26, 2009, 11:44:14
BT retail haven't (yet) migrated their existing "Up to 8Mbps" customers to 21CN.
But they have said they will.
To find out when, enter your phone number into This when it goes tits up (http://www.productsandservices.bt.com/consumerProducts/displayTopic.do?topicId=16738) :eek4:
They claim not to have moved anyone yet - but the 21CN network is struggling at my exchange.

QuoteWe estimate your maximum connection speed to be 0.256Mbps. This is the fastest speed your line can support.

I don't think so. :)

Isn't it just an advert for BT Broadband?  :dunno:

QuoteGreat news, our even faster broadband service offering up to 20Mb is available in your area! We estimate your maximum connection speed to be 5.0Mbps (Megabits per second) which means your telephone line supports the UK's most complete broadband package, BT Total Broadband.

Sorry, Rik, estimate 8Mbps here.  ;D

I reckon BT have done that to explain away my line slowing down. :)

Yes, though it's also access to their line checker database.

Curiously, I just checked my other line and it quotes 2.5Mb for that...

My point was that giving BT your phone number gives a screen:-

It says I will be able to manage 5.5 Mbps on 21CN - I actually manage 7Mbps.
However, it also says that sometime between 30/11/09 and May 2010, they expect to be migrating customers.
BT is quite a big ISP; I expect my exchange to collapse. ;D

I have obscured my phone number in that image.

Very wise.  :thumb: I get a different screen because we're already WBC enabled.

So are we - for at least a year.
BT could migrate it's customers now - if they wanted to.
All the equipment is in place and running (well nearly all the time).

Mine is running, but only at 2/3rds speed. :'(

 Broadband checker results

We have tested your line and can confirm your line supports the UK's most complete broadband package, BT Total Broadband. We estimate your maximum connection speed to be 0.512Mbps, which is the fastest speed your line can currently support.

If you're a new customer sign up to BT Total Broadband now or order a package which includes BT Total Broadband.

We always give you the best speed possible and this is the fastest speed your line can currently support. We are rolling out speeds of up to 20Mb across the country but this is not currently available in your area. You can keep up to date by visiting www.bt.com/20mb, where you can get the latest information and availability dates.

The actual speed you get could be lower and is dependent on several factors such as whether you have any internal home wiring, our network management policy and the number of people using the internet at the same time. Speeds are generally lower in the evening at peak times. You can find more information on all of these on BT.com.

I have just tested my line and the BT line tester confirms I am sync'd at 4554 with a 4meg profile, their very own  BT Broadband checker says 2Mb for the same line less than 1 minute later and emphasises it in bold "2.0Mbps. This is the fastest speed your line can support."

You would expect their database to be automatically updated by the actual figures achieved by the line tester, but then again, perhaps not.

It's nonsense.  That checker says I can 5mbps.  The Be checker which they say is really BT's checker said 3.5.  I actually can get 11.  It's all rubbish.

Your speed must have been too high, Steve

Well - in reality it said I can get 9 Mbs, which I seriously doubt since I currently have an 8,771 sync with an SNR of 3.5, which I don't expect to hold for more than a week (based on historical evidence).

You must have a noisier line than they think you should have, Steve, or they've got the line length wrong.

It said I could get 8Mbs which is my full sync, but of course no hint of WBC, thankfully  ;)

I just took a look at the BT check, gave it my phone number and told I can get max 4MB, gave it my postcode, told, great you can be part of the 20MB and you will get 6MB. Does not really check, does it now.

Said I can get 6.5, which is about half a mag slower than now :(
Although, I never understood BT and their "Upgrade from 2MB and get "up to" 8mb" and still keep 2mb ;) Now it's "upgrade from 2mb "up to 8mb" to "up to 20mb" and still keep you 2mb now!!!" or something to that extent.

It's like me saying I promise to give you up to a million pounds!* It's all advertising hogwash.

*any number from zero to one million decided by me!

Edit: Markup sorted

Oops. I just realised I work for a company that does exactly this. We offer "unlimited returns" on investments, with only one promise, we will not loose your money. So in 5 years you get your money back... and nothing else  :red:

i think that is probably the system for getting to lye and is actually telling you how fast you will go if you move to BT due to exchange congestion and lack of routing knowledge
