Title: What a git!
Post by: Niall on Aug 24, 2009, 22:15:30
I just thought I'd have an hour or so playing FEAR as I've never bothered to finish it. So installing it is the usual pain as the version I got was 5 CDs waaaaay back when. Anyway, I downloaded the "FULL UK PATCH" which was 299mb and bugger me, it didn't work because I have to have the UK version installed.

Oddly the US version is 600mb for the same full patch, which I'm now downloading because clearly I'm American  ???

Can I get my bandwidth back for something that's clearly labelled wrong? :(

I would guess the answer to that would be no, Niall.  ;D

Just this second installed the US patch, which worked. I'm baffled. Why the "UK" one was 299mb and the "US" one was 600mb is beyond me. That's 1gb I wont see again.

Well I played a level or two tonight, and I'm so disappointed. I remember that game looking awesome, with slightly dodgy lip syncing. It's VERY basic compared to what we see today. I really hadn't thought about how much effort goes into a modern game these days. I remember thinking at the time that it was a show case for the engine and I also remember that Nvidia were cheating at benchmarks with that game as they made special drivers specifically for that game in benchmarks. Now it looks like a generic budget game with some Dx9.0c stuff smattered about the place!

I bought the PC DVD version and spent ages benchmarking and tweaking to make the game run better.  The bullet time effects at the time were amazing.  And to think that I ran it on a Radeon X800XL.

It's still in my desk drawer I think.

I enjoyed playing it through, but I wouldn't go back to it now.

I expect a US megabyte is smaller than a Metric one just to make their sizes sound bigger.

I think it's down to language options. Perhaps there are more to cater for on the US release?
Sometimes things are missed out of different releases. Perhaps the US release had no extra levels or cut scenes or music or something?

Not every measurement is bigger, their gallons come up short compared to ours.
