Title: 1.5/2meg max or 1meg "fixed"?
Post by: AvengerUK on Feb 26, 2007, 12:55:00
Recently (as you may of already read) my line has had problems with max, mainly a decreased sync compaired to what it used to get - so, on the whole, its around 1.5meg actual download speed, sometimes (rarely) to 2meg - with interleaving on. My line *i believe* can support 1meg fixed - which only "came about" after i went to max, as before max it was 512, and red for 1meg/2meg (now amber).

I tempted to change it to 1meg fixed, (im 99.9% sure thats the fastest fixed rate i can get?) as when i was on 512kb/s fixed, i never had any problems - is it a wise idea...or a not so wise idea?

Also, is their a charge for upgrading/downgrading from max to fixed or fixed to max? (incase it doesent work out as well as im hoping!)

Thanks :)

Not sure as to whether there is a charge for the re-grade, Avenger, a quick call or email to CS will extract that information.

What's your d/s attenuation, that should be the determining factor in what fixed speed you get.

I beleive that it is 59 downstream...not 100% sure though!

That should get you a 1Mbps line then, iirc, the BT limits for 1M are >43db <63db. I had 1M at 55db attenuation, and that was very stable, gave me about 22db of noise margin.

I had a very stable 1mbps fixed speed with 57db attenuation.

Max has been a success in this case, giving me 1.5 at worst and 2.5 at best.

Hope it solves things for you, Avenger. Like Jupiter, Max has been good for me, but it's what works for you that matters, and at least it's not costing you anything to find out. Let us know how it goes.

Well, its back to fixed something or other! - as my l8nc graph is already looking far better than it did yesterday! (stability / ping wise). I'll have to wait until i get home to find out whether its 1meg or not!

I take it you can't develop a strategic headache, then, Avenger? :) I'd be dying to know myself...

I'm tempted to start a sort of 'Advent Calendar' for the new central, Avenger, we'll peel back a new window each day. :)

That was certainly my plan, I'm just trying to decide between Thornton's and Lindt. :)
