Title: So what have they done and why now?
Post by: Ann on Aug 06, 2009, 19:18:02
Oh my.  I've just used my MAC and now my sync has gone up from 5667 or whatever it was to 11021.  Now that is the weirdes thing ever.  Are they trying to tell me how much I'll regret this move and I'm stuck into it for a year?

Anyway, anyone else get similar increase?

IDNet have been working with BT to solve problems such as yours, Ann. It sounds like they are beginning to get results.

It's a shame they didn't tell me beforehand.

They probably didn't know from BT when a fix would be implemented.

It's still rubbish anyway.

Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test:  -provides background information.
   Your DSL connection rate: 11020 kbps(DOWN-STREAM),  1079 kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP profile for your line is - 9000 kbps
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 2154 kbps

and a noise margin of 4.8.. and interleaving turned off... ROFL.  I'm used to 12 or 13 with interleaving.  Oh well, maybe I'll get the full 8 from BE which will do me just fine.

By way of explanation -

That 12 or 13 was an extra 8db of clear signal that wasn't being used for coding bits, probably because of some BT 'regulation of service' (translation: theft).

Today's improvement in sync means that particular BT idiocy has left your line, so it is an improvement in service.  As long as the 4.8db noise margin (I think it may be a 4db target like I have -- this may be new to ADSL2+) doesn't let in too many errors you could keep this sync rate.  The throughput is another matter.  That's something else we are all waiting on.

Not sure what you mean by the full 8, but Be offers two things, by reputation:

Your line looks like it will support 11 Mbps, not just 8 Mbps.

Watch it though Ann, mine lasted 12 hours, and is now dying again. BT are claiming my line has always struggled with broadband, well always since their cowboy engineers screwed up.

Your lucky Ann! Mine is a complete joke!

Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test:  -provides background information.
    Your DSL connection rate: 5268 kbps(DOWN-STREAM),  536 kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP profile for your line is - 4000 kbps
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 2 kbps

This test was not conclusive and further testing is required.

Please wait whilst you are redirected to undertake a second test.
You now have two choices-

   1. If you wish to carry out further tests and you are competent to make changes to your ADSL system configuration, then please click on 'Continue' button.

   2. If not, please close the window using 'Exit' button and contact your ISP for further assistance with these results.

I've been harassing support for a week and nothing is getting done, I've just asked for my MAC code aswell.

If you read a little closer, I think you'll see Ann has already gone.   :bawl:

Maybe it will work for me as well then!  ;D

I'm considering it now too, but the thought of another migration, by BT engineers. fills me with dread

As long as you don't go anywhere with hefty contracts I don't think there is anything to lose really, maybe you'll eventually land somewhere where they actually got things right

and a noise margin of 4.8.

How odd, my noise margin also reduce today to 3.00 db which gave me instability and huge hike in connection speed coupled with virtually no throughput.

Judging by some of the stuff over on TB, this whole WBC thing seems to be a pile of hurt for everyone involved not just iDNet.

I've been reading around too, Tac. IMO, BT should be accountable for the mess they've created, yet they're not. At this point, I would say WBC is not fit for purpose. I've been lucky, so far, but I resync most days where I would hold a Max sync for 40 days at a time. That does not inspire confidence.

I wonder what it would do to my line, with a 2700 connected, it was resyncing every 1 - 2 days on max, since I put a 585v6 in, the syncs now happen every few days.

It shows how much of a lottery we are in when we buy a router, Glenn, doesn't it. :( With your line, I'd avoid it. There's almost certainly nothing to gain and lots to lose.

Not sure what you mean by the full 8,
I've opted for the deal that caps at 8 because it's cheap and as I was syncing at 5 something at the time there didn't seem any point in paying more.  On reflection I still don't think there is but I suspect I can easily upgrade if the mood takes me.

I would go if I could get Be in my area, but I cannot and IDNet speeds on non WBC are ok now for me, not having the latest and greatest has paid off, and with no date for WBC I feel quite safe  :fingers:

I can get Be LLU in my area ... and I'm going to seriously have to consider moving.

My case has been investigated by a specialist IDnet team within BT for several weeks now. I live around 1 km from an exchange and have had a BT engineer check all wiring and have a Belkin N1 router.

Other than short periods each morning where speeds run around 10000 kbps, my broadband has been running at around a third of the speed of my previous ISP.

Today is the worst yet: 1918 kbps

Your DSL connection rate: 14048 kbps(DOWN-STREAM),  1083 kbps(UP-STREAM)

You're not alone in having this problem, Ron. It seems to be affecting just a handful of users and generally those with good sync speeds. IDNet had a meeting with their account manager from BT today, and the problem is being further escalated (obviously, it started at tea lady level ;D). Hopefully, we'll have some news next week.
