Title: Did anything happen this morning?
Post by: Noreen on Jul 30, 2009, 12:23:24
Haven't been able to get on internet all morning. Router said that it was connected but I couldn't get any further. Ended up rebooting my router a few minutes ago and I'm now online. ???

Nothing I know of, Noreen, and when I spoke to support all was well. It sounds a bit like a stale session from what you say, were all your router lights normal?

You've not had thunder and lightning have you Noreen, there's been a lot around here last night ?

Earlier on they kept flickering, I'd assumed that it was something at IDNet's end as the router said that it was connected. All a mystery to me. Just one of those things, I suppose.

Your router appears to have dropped the PPP at 20:54 last night, Noreen, possibly as a result of a mains spike or lightning. Until you re-booted, it was sending PPP connection requests but the session was stale, so BT's equipment didn't respond. If you can't account for the timing, it might be worth checking for a firmware update, but it looks like a one-off issue from what IDNet can see.

Why it happened, Rik, although now that I'm online again I'm not too bothered, ;D

Did you notice your lights flicker a bit before 9 last night, or was there a thunderstorm? From what can be seen remotely, it looks like your router 'choked' and went into an endless loop of trying to connect, hence the flickering, but BT believed the connection was already established, so refused the requests. When you re-booted, you cleared the stale session and were able to reconnect.

Thanks, Rik. I didn't look at the router after about six last night and there wasn't a thunderstorm. At least I'll know what to do next time. ;D

A re-boot, sometimes a power down for a few minutes, can cure a multitude of problems, Noreen. Ultimately, they are computers, after all - so get their knickers in a twist like any other box. :)

And if a few minutes doesn't work, give it half an hour before turning it back on :)
