Title: Router 'piggybacking'
Post by: rumi on Jul 27, 2009, 14:06:41
This is a sort-of cross-post in that my wife asked the question of IDNet via a support ticket. She got a 'probably'-type response but before we attempt to try this I thought I'd ask here in case someone has actually done it. So, here goes:

"I've got a Netgear DG834 wired router (inc. modem)and an ADSL2+ account. I've just bought a Samsung netbook and obviously would like to use its wireless capabilities.

A friend is switching to a Mac and is buying an new Apple router and has offered me his Netgear WGR614v9 Wireless-G router. Unfortunately this doesn't have a modem.

My question is this: can I piggy-back his router onto mine using an ethernet cable and so use it to allow me to connect my netbook wirelessly ?".

Many thanks.

It should work, take a look here:

It should be quite simple. Connect the Wan of the Netgear WGR614v9 to a normal port on your current netgear, making sure that you disable DHCP :)

Probably a few other settings to change but that is the main thing.

Thanks for that, Rik.

Now, I must confess that the only wireless I know about is made of bakelite and contains valves so I assume you were highlighting: The WGR614v9 supports behaving as a "wireless repeater" already, as part of its default set of features.

If so, I just connect the WGR614v9 to my plugged-in DG834 using an ethernet cable, switch it on and ....... then what? Please accept my apologies in advance for being so thick about all things wireless  :(

What Lance said, Rumi. You only want one DHCP server.

OK, thanks Rik, Lance - that gives me enough to make a start  :)
