Title: look I'm online
Post by: coreservers on Jul 23, 2009, 23:24:59
I dont want to tempt fate, but finally I'm alive outside work. syncing at 5.5mb looking at 8mb max. however maybe someone on here can help.
the dsl light on the netgear router is still showing amber?
here's the stats
By the way it turned out the circuit had been built completely wrong and they've had to compeltely rebuild it from scratch.
ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 8336 kbps 445 kbps
Line Attenuation 40 db 11 db
Noise Margin 3 db 20 db

Big thanks to Miriam, Brian Tim and James, for sticking with it and my tantrums . lets hope it stays up. BT engineer was great and honest, got his mobile for future issues.

The stats are fine -- don't know about the light on the modem.

You may wind up syncing a little lower since 3 db doesn't leave much room for noise events.

Greater than 8M sync is good for 40 db attenuation.

the noise margin is creeping up now at 6db

That means noise has subsided since the router connected. Glad this is sorted, you must be pleased. :)

I'm not sure why the light would be amber - try rebooting, and if that doesn't help, I'd make sure you have the latest firmware.

seems to be creeping up all the time. such a relief. The amber light as far as I can find out means training mode, so will leave for next 10 days I think

stats this morning look healthier
ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 8336 kbps 445 kbps
Line Attenuation 40 db 11 db
Noise Margin 8 db 20 db

it is indeed, currently on speed.io at 6997 down up 445 with pings of 45ms

I think I might get 7.5 to 8mb in the end

Great news, Core. What a bunch of idiots, though, I would hope some heads are going to be banged together about this. If you get a good BT engineer, you're laughing, but there are too many timeservers. :(

The amber light, btw, suggests the router is faulty to me. The training mode it indicates is when the line is training (syncing) with the exchange, it shouldn't stay amber once the connection is established. Any chance you could try a different router?

acording to the engineer, it had been set up as a data stream, which wont run with 21cn. so he had to work until 11.30pm. admitted straight away it was a waste of time coming to the house, as he couldnt see anything from the exchange. Thanks as well Rik for updates and passsing my number to support

guess it could be faulty it's an unlocked sky one. but it;s worknig fine at the moment, and i've nto got a reliable one just yet. i'll order one as soon as tho

I'd still try an alternative router if you can, you're upstream rate is odd at 445, but with 20db of margin.
