Hi all
just wondered if anyone could help me with an issue im having
the problem i am getting is every now and then, sometimes 2-3 times a day, sometimes ok for days i get
"limited or no connectivity" with my router
turning the wireless card off on my laptop and restarting doesnt fix it, the only way i can get it to work is to restart my router
with the limited connectivity i cant log into the router either
the wireless card driver is upto date and the router has the most recent firemware
has anybody come across this before and found a fix
thanks
Chris
Chris these links may help;

cheers buddy
the first link has no answer i can find to the issue, just sends me to more links and more
the second link i cant locate the {GUID} registry subkey :rant2: lol
I have had this happen sometimes with the PCs on my network and indeed the only fix seems to be to reboot the router.
It seems to be a distance thing and also a problem picking up an IP address.
I am using Netgear adapters for the machines that are not hardwired into the router and I found that using another USB port for the individual adapters sometimes helps.
I get this all the time with my Netgear DG834Gv5 Firmware V6.00.25. I didn't get it at all with the Netgear DG834Gv4. The only way I can fix it is either by rebooting the router or hitting the 'Re-Scan Now' and/or 'Apply' buttons in the Netgear 'Wireless Settings' menu from a PC that's cabled to the router.
I have no idea what causes the problem unless it's a firmware issue.
this is only a vista issue
i have another laptop on xp that never faults
maybe i need to get rid of vista and go xp again ???
All the laptops here run Vista. I hadn't considered it might be a probem with Vista although in my case it certainly only started with a change of router. I do have an old laptop running XP, I'll dust it off and see what happens.
If wireless channel on router is set to auto try fixing it to 1,6 or 11
still struggling with this issue
have been away for 2 weeks using a wireless router and my laptop every day with no limitied connectivity issues at all
so am guessing its some sort of set up issue with my router
am wondering tho if its a wpa2 issue
as i think the connection was wep while i was away????
anyone got any thoughts on this?
cheers
Have you tried the manual channel change suggested?
not yet, will do that now
will it require a change to the settings on the laptops or just the router and laptops will adjust as needed?
sorry not really big with routers
cheers
Just set the router, Chris, the lappies should find it.
is it the wide channel or standard channel im changing lol :red:

Going by the frequency, the standard channel, Chris.
cool, it was 11 and have changed it to 7 as seen in pick
see how i get on
am wondering is it poss a ip issuing problem inside the router, can i assign an ip to my laptop so it always connects to this ip if that makes sense?
I would go for channels 1 or 6, Chris, there's less overlap there. Yes, you can issue fixed IP addresses to each machine.
well changed the channel and thought all was ok, had 2-4 laptop turn offs yesterday and it re connected each time no problems
get up this morning and back to limited or no connectivity  lol
so wondering what it could be next, am trying to figure out how to assign an ip address to each laptop but can figure it out, my router is a linksys wag160n
hope someone can help
cheers
Sorry, Chris, I've no experience with Linksys. :(

In my experience, when you get limited or no connectivity, assigned IPs manually does not help as there is some underlying problem. Tbh, it sounds like the security key is in wrong. Try removing the connection completely from the laptop and reconnecting.
Seems you have a WAG160N. Two things I would do:
a. Update the firmware from Linksys website
b. I faced exactly the same problem as you when I got my Vista x64 machine. What I had to do is to set the modem by hand. If you have an XP or otherwise laptop with working connectivity to your modem/router, pick the Local IP address and starting IP address from the router setup on the working machine, close it down, and use the same parameters in the corresponding fields on the Vista machine.
c. For some reason auto detect does not work. If it still refuses to engage, go back to a working machine and copy, 1 by 1, all of the setup parameters. Turn that machine off and replicate them on your Vista PC.
This should work.

set the modem by hand????? how do you mean? aslo where do i put settings on vista?
cheera
Use the router set-up page, from your browser type http://192.168.1.1 and you'll immediately see what I mean. Just replicate the entries of your working PC into the Vista one.
