Title: Speed Up Your Windows XP
Post by: Nerval on Feb 22, 2007, 09:43:56
I've just discovered that Windows XP indexes everything just in case you want to do a search for it, and that performance gains are to be had by disabling this - assuming you don't spend a lot of time searching your disk.

I haven't done measurements to test the benefit, but it can only be a good thing.

Instructions Here (http://lifehacker.com/software/optimization/turn-off-indexing-and-speed-up-windows-xp-031440.php)

Always one of the first things I turn off on a new install!

One thing to note, Nerv, is that some programs will malfunction if indexing is disabled on the disk, but are perfectly happy if the indexing service is turned off (which has the same effect). One example is WordPerfect, which can't 'see' graphics files on a disk where indexing is disabled, even though no indexing is taking place because the service is disabled. I've never been able to work out why.

Id also try turning off vairous services. Be carefull though, turn the wrong one off, and its basically a self descruct button!
The ones i currently turn off, are: Print spooler (i have a sperate PC for the printer), and Wireless config something or other, which seems pritty pointless on a desktop!

Well done Nerval.

I'd send some "karma", but it seems to be turned off.

For must people UPnP can be turned off, which adds to security. Ignore that if you use torrents.

If you want to slim down services in XP and add to your security you should use the list of services that can be turned off as produced by BLACK VIPER.

The man is / was a genius with Windows systems and had a huge following, sadly he suddenly disappeared from the net,his work is saved and mirrored on several sites.

Go here...........MajorGeeks (http://majorgeeks.com/page.php?id=12)

There is info for most user scenarios and if you find you need a service you can turn it back on.
