Title: Question for Xbox Live users.
Post by: vitriol on Jul 19, 2009, 00:31:06
Downloads from live.  Not sure if there's something wrong at my end or in idnet so I  thought that I'd ask you all.

When I go to download a demo, arcade game or video.  Starting the donwnload itself takes ages.  This is what I mean.

Navigate to game marketplace > Wait for 10 secs while it loads.
Click on demo / game / video > wait 30 secs.

After this the download link is available to click on.

Click on link.  Wait another 10 secs.

Download starts and downloads pretty quickly.  It's getting to this point that is annoying me.

I use a Netgear DG834GT router and DHCP is enabled which automatically gived my Xbox it's IP.  Pnp is enabled and I've never ran into situations where I couldn't join a game, speak to someone etc.

The reason that I've decided to ask is I was round my brother in laws earlier and he doesnt have to wait like this.  He's with BT.  So could it possibly an IDNET issue or should I try portforwarding directly to the Xbox or putting it into the DMZ instead of leaving that to PnP.

All comments welcomed.

Sorry, Vit, I know less about game consoles than just about anything else. :(

We have 2 xbox 360s in the house and both are away been repaired, one for the second time. So can't help you till they return from Germany. However there are DHCP issues with the latest GT firmware and if this is a lookup issue can you set alternate DNS servers for the 360. DMZ should rule out upnp issues I believe. Port forwarding is more reliable than UPNP but it will need the same reserved IP address or a static one. The latest DG834GT firmware Lan IP reservation doesn't seem to work reliably.

Thanks for the replies.  Steve I don't think I'm running the latest GT firmware, I can't ever remember updating it,  the Xbox always gets the same IP address as I set that up on the router so maybe portforwarding is worth a try.

Will mess around with portforwarding and the DMZ.  Will let you know what happens.

Like I said apart from this small issue it Live is flawless.  It's very puzzling.

Not had any reported issues with Live on our Xbox 360s using DHCP and UPNP via DG834N although saying that since they've been broke the routers not crashed either ;D

Bit late to reply and the problem may have been solved but I downloaded a game on the marketplace yesterday and the whole process was smooth.

edit: Just checked when you posted the message    Well anyways seems to be working ok with mine  :)

Can I ask how your network is setup?

i.e.  does your xbox get the ip from the router via DHCP or did you manually assign IP / DNS etc...  Do you use PnP , portforwarding or is your Xbox in the routers DMZ?

Any info you can provide would be most welcome.  This is becoming a major annoyance to me.

hello vitriol,

it's the same for me on my 360. and i'm 99.99% sure it's live being a little slow. it does take a while to navigate to a demo link for example. once the download starts it's fine and gaming is fine also.

If that was the case Punch then surely at my brother in laws it would be the same?  But there is no waiting at all when downloading things.
Gaming itself is absolutely fine.

I had nothing but trouble with our Netgear router and the Xbox's - We have 3 in our house , sometimes all online at once.  It would randomly decide to make the NAT setting strict rather tha open...

I resolved this by replacing the netgear with a d-link 2640b.  works out of the box with Xbox's, and no messing with ports being opened etc.

The xbox does get its IP from the router and is also wired.  I have uPnP enabled and haven't done any port forwarding.  I'm not overly clued up when it comes to adding things to the DMZ so haven't really touched this.  For me it was a case of plug and play, seemed to work fine.  I have a Netgear DG834GT router.

people with netgear routers should be careful with the firmware that they are using.

for instance the latest DG834/DG834G V4 firmware (5.01.14) is completely borked when it comes to xbox live/playstation network.

downgrading to the version before can solve some or all problems.

I've never updated the firmware on it and I'm unsure of what version it currently has.  I bought it about 3 years ago.

I think I'll have a mess about using portforwarding and DMZ.  See what happens.  Thanks for all the replies.

Does your Xbox pass the Network test in the settings menu?

As mentioned earlier I had many problems with the Netgear router and our (admittedly) multiple Xbox's on the network - Changed to a D-Link 2640b (best £5 I ever spent from Fleebay) and no more problems at all.  Have you seen this website  http://www.xboxlivetheguide.co.uk/  - it has loads of tips and recommendations on settings etc.

Yeah it passes the tests with flying colours.  A little update though,  I switched to my missus's profile and went off to download a game video and it was virtually instant, no delays.  Switch back to my profile and the delays are back.  Pretty weird.  I think I'll post on the Xbox forum and see if others have the same issue.
