Title: New harvesting emails
Post by: Niall on Jul 18, 2009, 13:38:07
Just incase anyone wasn't aware, there seems to be a new spate of fake bank emails doing the rounds, asking you to follow a link to confirm your bank details. So far I've seen Barclays ones and Natwest. There's also, as of 2 days ago for me, fake Ebay emails going around too.

Dear eBay user,

We would like to inform you that we have released a new version of eBay Confirmation form. This form is required to be completed by all eBay users.

Please follow these steps:
1.Open the form at http://LINK REMOVED!
2.Follow given instructions.

Thank you,
eBay

Notice it says "ebay user" rather than your actual ebay name, which all emails I've had from them (as a result of me contacting them, never a blind update email from them) have had.

Thankfully, browsers have phishing filters built in these days, so you should be prevented from going to most sites anyway. OpenDNS also blocks a lot.

I forgot to mention that I've reported them all to each bank/site and so far only had a reply from Natwest. Mainly because I'm a Natwest customer I presume.

I don't think any of the banks actually look into them, but probably just add it to some kind of block list. That's not the solution, imo.

I always try and report it to Bank Safe Online (http://www.banksafeonline.org.uk/) as I think they do actually try and do something.

Any emails like that should be deleted instantly.  No bank worth it's salts would ask you to do that.  They would post a letter to you or phone you.  Thanks for the heads up Niall.
