Title: When should I re-sync?
Post by: PuncH on Jul 17, 2009, 17:56:17
Hello, Hi & Howdy...

Up until last night my router had been on for around 200 hours, sync'd at 18575 with a noise margin of approx 12db at the start. This gradually dropped over time to just over 10db last night.

I then had to switch off and unplug while a thunderstorm passed and I left it all off today as well while I was at work (good job too as there were further storms during the day).

I've switched back on tonight, and I'm now sync'd at 17500 ish with a noise margin of 12.1db.

So...if I notice the noise margin dropping again over the next few days would it be an idea to force a re-sync so I can try to get a better sync rate and therefore profile?

Thanks in advance

A re-sync in the morning will generally get you a higher speed, as there's less noise around then. However, this also risks greater instability when noise increases later.

A double edged sword

so should i do it when the noise margin is lower? or higher?

Do you want speed or stability? If speed, do it in the morning, if stability, do it in the late evening.

In the morning you should have a higher noise margin.

won't having a higher noise margin push the sync down?

Higher margin will give a faster sync - but as has been said - may lead to instability during evenings when noise increases (and so lowers the margin).

There is less interference around in the morning so you can achieve a higher sync for your  given margin whether its set at 6,9,12 by BT, when the noise increases during the night if the margin drops to O a resync will be required. If you resync at night when noise/interference is at its highest the sync rate will be lower for a given margin but during the day as interference is less the margin will not be threatened , the result a more stable connection.
